The German Shepherd had never seen the man before. But all that the dog cared about was helping him.

During a cold spell in March 2021, a young man in Massachusetts decided to bike across an ice-covered pond in a park, figuring that the ice would support his weight. He was wrong.

The ice began to crack. Soon, it gave away entirely. The man was helpless as he sank under the icy water. But he was able to cry for help.

Luckily, Diesel, a five-year-old German Shepherd, was walking through the park. He heard the man shouting out.

The dog looked up to his owner, Thomas Walsh, with an urgent expression.

The owner could tell that the dog could hear something that he couldn’t. So he took out his AirPods and let Diesel guide him to the problem.

Eventually, Walsh saw the pond and the man struggling to stay afloat in the freezing water.

So Walsh and Diesel rushed to the pond, hoping they could save the man.

Soon, Walsh told the man to grab onto the ice. But the ice kept on falling away.

“I told him to try to relax, catch your breath, because he was panicking. My instinct was to go in and help him. I’m a great swimmer, but you can’t do that in the wintertime.” – Thomas Walsh.

Then another passerby noticed the situation. He came up to them with a long branch. Walsh and the other passerby held out the branch, and the man in the water took ahold of it.

Soon, Walsh and the passerby were pulling and pulling. Eventually, the man was lying on solid ice. He then carefully crawled back onto the ground.

The man thanked Walsh and the passerby. Walsh said that much of the thanks should be directed to Diesel.

If it weren’t for Diesel, he would never have known that the man had fallen into the water in the first place.

A fire crew arrived at the scene, and they were amazed to see that the man had already been rescued.

Fire Chief Matthew Grafton later told reporters the following: “[We] are grateful for this outcome and for Diesel alerting his owner that something was wrong.”

The fire chief also stated that Walsh and the passerby made the right decision by staying away from the ice and not getting into the water.

Instead, they opted for a smart solution in getting a branch and, of course, dialing 911.

Fire Chief Grafton also stated that “these actions helped to save a man’s life this afternoon and are nothing short of heroic.”

The man then went to the hospital, where the doctors confirmed that he was not in any urgent danger.

Of course, no German Shepherd owner could be surprised by this story.

German Shepherds always look out for others. Diesel is a fine example of why German Shepherds make perfect companions.

Next time someone tells you that they think that German Shepherds are untrustworthy, just tell them about Diesel’s selfless rescue!
