German shepherd ‘saves owner’s life’ when their training video gets too real
There are moments when we realize the true meaning of âmanâs best friendâ – and for this German shepherd owner, it was a moment that saved her life.
TikTok user tinastikeleather shared in a video that she’s suffered from seizures and debilitating migraines since she was 23. After countless visits to neurologists and taking different medications, her condition did not improve.
That was when she got her service dog, Max.
Max is a German shepherd who supports her through her battles.
Her TikTok account is filled with Maxâs training videos.
His training involves different situations and how she reinforces response habits depending on the attack. One video shows her screaming for help in a different room and checks how quickly Max responds to the cue.
There are also environmental training videos where Max reacts to attacks in cramped spaces, outdoors, and indoors.
But in one of their training videos, things got a bit too real.
And if Max wasnât with her, the situation couldâve ended much worse.
In the video that has been played over 7 million times, you can see Tina was washing the dishes. She admitted in the caption that the clip was intended as a training clip and she was unaware of what was about to happen.
Max is lying at her feet when he suddenly perks up out of nowhere.
He stares at Tina for a short while then suddenly stands. Tina was a bit baffled by her dogâs sudden reaction but didnât think too much about it.
Max started smelling her hand and her arms. He even stood up on the sink as he tried to get her attention. At that point, she thought that he was just looking for affection. She tried to calm her dog down by pointing to the ground to cue him to sit.
Then she suddenly paused for a moment before falling.
Good thing Max was already aware of what was happening and quickly positioned himself so Tina can fall slowly. His preemptive reaction gave Tina a chance to maneuver herself and avoid other injuries.
In a study released in 2019, dogs were proven to be reliable companions for people who are vulnerable to epileptic seizures. As explained in the journal Scientific Reports, dogs can detect positives ranging from 67% to 100% while their capability to identify negatives ranges from 95% to 100%
According to Rita Howson, chief executive for Support Dogs, canines have an uncanny ability when it comes to observing humans.
âDogs are very good observers of humans. Dogs know what is going to happen when you pick up their leash â their behavior indicates this.”
Their behavior can also change when they pick up on more subtle cues â maybe a smell or behavioral change in the client that occurs before an oncoming seizure,â she told The Guardian.
This connection between dogs and humans is what saved Tina that day.
In a follow-up video, Tina took the moment to thank all of their TikTok friends who extended their concern and support.
And if thereâs one more fellow to thank, itâs definitely Max who, with his dedication and quick thinking, helped them avoid a situation that couldâve gone worse.
A best friend and a lifesaver through and through.
