When you wake up in the morning, you go straight to the bathroom and do your thing.

But what if your pet is the one who uses the mirror at home?

Hmmm. That sounds strange.

In a new study, however, the mirror test is a classic but now contentious self-awareness test.

According to a post from American Kennel Club,

“In this test, researchers secretly mark an animal’s body then give that animal access to a mirror. If the animal touches the mark while looking in the mirror or turns to examine the mark’s reflection, then researchers conclude that animal has self-recognition, a huge indicator of self-awareness.”

What was the result?

They mentioned that many animals, including great apes, dolphins, elephants, and magpies, have passed the mirror test.

However, they discovered that:

“Dogs fail, which comes as no surprise to anybody who has watched their puppy try to befriend the dog in the mirror.”

Meanwhile, one German Shepherd mom shared a video of this sweet moment on TikTok.

She’d just caught her little dog staring at his reflection in the mirror. And he’s completely enthralled!

(You’ll notice that this German Shepherd puppy is also absolutely adorable.)

A few moments later…

The puppy was just staring at himself as he lifted his paw into the air.

He appeared to be waving to himself.

Exactly like that. He was having a good time in the mirror.

Ella Williams, the fur mom, wrote in her post:

“soooo my puppy noticed himself in the mirror today and it’s the cutest thing ever so i thought i’d share 🥰 #fyp #MyOrder #puppy #germanshepherdmom”

Since then, the short video has gone viral. It has received over seven million views.

You’ll realize that many people love dogs, and they like the adorable behavior of this German Shepherd puppy.

The responses are brimming with love and praise.

One left a comment saying,

“Allow myself to introduce… myself.”

Another mentioned: “Omg he’s waving hi to himself.”

But, did you know that…

“Dogs do not have the ability to recognize their own reflection in a mirror the way humans and some other animals are able to,” according to a Wag! post.

Puppies are generally the only ones who appear to be interested in looking at themselves in a mirror.

They do not, however, recognize their reflection as an image of themselves.

Wag! said, “Science has long been fascinated with animals’ abilities to recognize themselves in mirrors.”
