Owner gets into the shower – then he and his German shepherd put on a show
Many dogs like to bark and howl. Some even like to sing, trying to keep a tune as they listen to their favorite song. Take Maximus, for example, every time he hears his dad start to sing, he can’t help but howl along in his own special way. Fortunately, for us, his dad was able to catch the whole thing on camera.
Maximus loves to howl along to people singing
It all started when Maximus’ dad noticed that his German shepherd pup liked to join in whenever he heard others singing. Thinking that the spectacle would be a good thing for everyone to see, he decided to capture it on video. Now, all he had to do was get Maximus to sing.
Maximus’ dad gets it all on video
Setting up the camera, Maximus’ dad got in the shower. He chose the popular “Trolololo” song by Eduard Khil for the video. You see Maximus lying on the floor, head down. In the background, you can hear his dad’s singing. As Maximus lies there, his ears begin to twitch, the first sign that something wonderful is about to happen.
Maximus starts small but soon is howling at the top of his lungs
At first, you can only hear whimpers issuing from Maximus. Soon, though, the whimpers grow into a low growl before finally, Maximus can take it no more. Lifting his head up high, he howls along as his dad sings the tune. At this point, there is no stopping the diva dog as his howls continue to grow to match the intensity of his owner’s voice.
Why do dogs sing?
What makes Maximus so great at singing? Who knows? But like many dogs, he probably does so instinctively. Theories are that dogs like to sing to certain sounds that carry a pitch similar to another dog’s howl. So, if your voice has the right pitch when you sing, then maybe your dog relates it to the dog howls from his ancient past.
But don’t worry; chances are it doesn’t matter where the sound is coming from, such as a cell phone ringtone or other devices. As long as it is the right pitch, chances are your dog will howl along. So, it is not a deep connection to you after all. Your dog is only howling because that is what he is wired to do.
Should you encourage or discourage your dog to sing?
If your dog’s howling is a nuisance to you or your neighbors, there are ways of stopping it. Start by trying positive reinforcement. Reward them for stopping when you tell them not to howl. You can do this by giving them a reward when they listen. Otherwise, you might need to investigate to determine what is causing the howling. Then it is as simple as eliminating the cause, even if it is your voice.
You can also encourage this type of behavior if it doesn’t bother you or anyone else. Simply allow them to howl along to your singing and reward them when they are finished. Who knows, maybe you can get them on video just like Maximus’ dad.
