German shepherd “walking through wall” is the optical illusion taking over the internet

Optical illusions occur when the brain misinterprets what your eyes are seeing. Usually, this occurs when your brain misinterprets a pattern, which is a part of the human survival instinct. A video on Reddit has been turning heads for the optical illusion it creates of a dog seeming to phase through a wall.

And while the illusion eventually reveals itself to be a case of mistaken perception, initially it is pretty convincing.

More than meets the eye

In most cases, a brick wall is a brick wall, solid and thwarting any attempts to simply pass through it. In a video, a German shepherd is seen with its paws up on a brick wall next to who you can only assume is his owner. What happens next has left some scratching their heads, wondering exactly what happened.

A magical dog

As the video progresses, the dog drops down to the ground and then seems to walk straight into the wall. The German shepherd was labeled “Harry Doggo” by some of the commenters on Reddit after Harry Potter from the J.K. Rowling series of books highlighting the boy wizard’s adventures.

What is really going on?

A moment later, though, the illusion becomes apparent as the dog’s head appears behind the woman’s legs. It is clear that the dog simply had walked in a circle with its furry body against the brick wall. But what caused the minor illusion to be so convincing to many?

An answer to the illusion

Chances are, the bulk of the dog’s fur flattened against the wall, making him appear to be stuck into the bricks of the surface. And while many of the commenters on Reddit agreed that the illusion was pretty convincing, not everybody thought so.

Some of the comments included one fellow Redditor proclaiming, “BRB, going to Hogwarts.”

Another added, “My brain hurts every time I watch it. I’ve watched this like 30 times now.”

Of course, the naysayers had to give their input, with one stating, “I just don’t see it. That’s just how dogs are shaped.”

Keeping hope alive

Still, the idea of a dog being able to phase into a wall is pretty magical, just like in the books when Harry Potter runs through the column on train platform 9 ¾. Now, if we could just find the real way to get to Hogwarts.
