Sweet German shepherd refuses to let owners eat her brand-new lobster friend

It was a fancy dinner that turned into a moment of ultimate friendship.

Dogs have always been man’s best friend. But there are moments when they become best friends with other animals too. We’ve seen dogs befriend their proverbial rivals, the cats, and also rabbits, ducks, and even horses.

But in a video that became viral several years back, a dog found a friend in the unlikeliest of creatures. You can even say that they’ll never cross paths in their lives unless her parents are throwing a fancy dinner.

In the video, Sami the German shepherd was hunched over a lobster.

Her owners bought the crustacean to serve as dinner but Sami had other plans. In the video, you can see her protecting the lobster between her big paws while she tries to bite off anyone who intends to get her newfound friend.

You can hear her owners giggle and laugh as Sami intercepted their grabby hands with her head or her paws.

At one point, one of the people around Sami almost succeeded in retrieving the dinner.

He gently pushed Sami’s chin up to give him more access then he pulled the lobster closer to him. Sami was faster, though. She’ll never let anyone get to her friend.

And before the guy could even pick the lobster up, she pounced on the crustacean, successfully covering it with her body once again.

Sami even tried to pick up the lobster.

In the video, you can see her trying to bite onto the lobster’s head but alas, her friend’s features are either slippery or spiny.

Sami’s owners also shared that this event may have been caused by Sami’s maternal instinct.

They said that Sami was very motherly.

Her reaction, while providing a significant delay in the kitchen, wasn’t something new to Sami’s owners. They said she also acted the same way around their family cat’s kittens. She would watch over them while ensuring their safety.

There are others, however, who expressed their concern over the video and warned dog owner’s about a dog’s non-verbal language.

A professional dog trainer said that people may have misinterpreted Sami’s intentions.

“She knows the lobster is not her puppy. It is a living piece of food, basically,” said Andrea Kilkenny to Huffington Post, a professional dog trainer and owner of Our Gang Pet Services, a company based in New Jersey specializing in pet training.

“In dog language, this is ‘resource guarding,’” Kilkenny added. “She’s not protecting it from harm.”

The professional dog trainer explained that “resource guarding” is when dogs are preventing people or other animals take their resources from them. She also shared that resources can range from food, toys, or sleeping areas.

She also warned that the situation could’ve turned dangerous.

You can see in the video that Sami curled her lips and bared her teeth when one of the dogs approached the lobster. While she commended Sami’s self-control in the video, she said that there’s still a chance that things would’ve turned into aggression.

But to whichever the explanation, Kilkenny said that dog owners should be more attentive to their dog’s behavioral cues so that man and beast can live harmoniously.
