These two German shepherds are best friends with a macaw

If you own a dog and a bird, you probably already know how hard it is to make them get along with each other. There’s always the fear of them hurting each other.

One parrot is proving to everyone that birds can get along with dogs.

In fact, they can even be best friends- just like Rio, Zoro, and Raven. These three are gaining popularity on the internet for their unusual friendship.

Rio is a Macaw. With his big wings and colorful feathers, it’s hard to miss him. And if you do, he’ll make sure you notice him. After all, he likes being the center of attention.

Rio grew up with Zoro and Raven.

They are German Shepherds that love to play, sleep, and annoy Rio. Getting back (in a playful way) at their colorful friend is one of the things they like to do.

The Macaw has no problem getting along with the dogs.

Since they grew up with each other, they consider themselves best friends. They have each other’s backs. They annoy one another, too!

For the animals’ safety, their humans still exercise caution.

They don’t leave the three by themselves when they’re together. It’s always supervised play. Fortunately, they don’t hurt each other. They might poke one another, but they remain gentle with each other.

People on the internet are getting amazed by the three’s one-of-a-kind friendship.

One YouTube user said:

“Isn’t this the cutest thing you have ever seen?!?!?”

Another one commented:

“Wow, such beautiful animals!”

There was also this person who was able to relate to the animals’ story. He said:

“Aww love this…I love birds and German Shepherds are the best. When I was a child we used to have a mynah bird and a German Shepherd and the bird would fly and land on the dog’s head. The bird was very bossy but the dog never once tried to hurt it.”

Having the animals get used to each other wasn’t an easy process.

And if you’re planning on doing the same thing, it’s important that you know how to properly train them to be around each other.

The first step is to introduce them slowly.

In the wild, dogs are considered predators. Naturally, they’ll see birds as prey. Even if you see your dog acting timid, it will still has that instinct to hunt the bird.

So, when introducing your bird, go at a very slow pace. Let them be in contact with each other a couple of times. Start with a few minutes and do it in the next couple of weeks.

Pick a neutral area.

Get the animals in an area that’s not familiar to both animals. This can help lessen the chances of them acting aggressively.

Don’t forget to reward your animals.

Give them plenty of treats as a way to reward them for their good behavior while they’re still in the introductory phase.

And like what Rio’s human does, always supervise your pets.

Even if you’ve successfully completed several sessions of safely getting your dog and bird accustomed to each other, continue to supervise them.
