German shepherd “parents” have sweetest bond with baby chicks they raised as their own
Used to, if you had chickens, you had to keep your eye out to make sure no animals got to them. This includes protecting them from foxes, wild ferrets, and even common household dogs. German shepherds Chewie and Jax, though, are a special pair.
Chewie and Jax surprised their owners when they took a liking to some baby chicks
Hailing from Gold Coast, Queensland, the pair surprised their owners after they brought some baby chicks home. Soon, the two were cuddling and helping to raise the brood of chicks. They even made sure to keep them clean by giving them plenty of tongue licks.
“Jax is truly the most gentle dog! I looked over today and saw all the chicks all over Jax’s paws, I started recording it but it wasn’t until I got closer, I realized Jax had his bone from this morning and was letting the chickens share it. Just Amazing,” their owner wrote on Instagram.
A dog’s natural instinct
Normally, a German shepherd, or most dogs for that matter, instinctually want to attack a chicken when they see one. Through careful training, you can get them acclimated to chickens so that they do don attack. The easiest way to do this is to expose them to chickens, or chicks in the case of Chewie and Jax, while the dog is in your presence.
Getting your dog used to chickens takes time and patience
Through gentle correction when the dog is too rough with the livestock, you can eventually train them to be gentler with the chickens and chicks. Make sure to expose your dog to the chickens every day until eventually, they get used to the idea of being around chickens without the urge to eat them.
If you are fortunate enough, your dog will not have much of an urge to eat the chickens, to begin with, and it will be easier to train. More than likely though, if you have a German shepherd, their high energy might make it more difficult to train them. Simply show patience and your dog should eventually get the idea.

And while the chicks were initially a handful, chirping and keeping the dogs up throughout the day and night, they eventually grew up. Now, they hang out with the dogs like it is the most natural thing in the world to do. The dogs and the chickens are the best of friends and hang out together all of the time.
