Teen boys recreate “Evolution of Dance” to spice up prom night
Dance transcends both time and space.
While generations can’t stop criticizing each other over entitlement, ruining the environment, and avocado toast, you can always trust the arts to bring people together.
That’s part of the reason so many people – over 3 million – have watched a “new” “Evolution of Dance” video by a group of teens posted in 2013. No one can resist as they bust some vintage moves to classic hits.
The original “Evolution of Dance” was the creation of comedian-turned-public-speaker Judson Laipply, but there have been hundreds of imitators since the 2006 video that’s now been viewed over 300 MILLION times.
The four teens from a school in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany choreographed their own response and performed the popular version at their prom celebration.
The young men get things started with a nod to the 1950s via Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” before launching into the twist via Chubby Checker’s 1960 hit.
James Brown’s “I Feel Good” is always a popular choice to get people grooving and it’s no different if you’re 17 or 70.
The disco years and the rest of the 70s get a pop rather than rock treatment with songs such as The Bee Gees’ “Night Fever,” The Village People’s “YMCA,” and Jamaican vocalist Carl Douglas’ “Kung Fu Fighting.”
The teens then leap, quite literally into the 1980s with the Dirty Dancing theme song “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life,” complete with the famous lift!
While the 80s and 90s don’t seem very “vintage” to most of us, these performers weren’t even born yet when songs like “Ice Ice Baby” or Run DMC’s “It’s Like That” were released.
Even the best Michael Jackson years were before their time, so “Beat It” is an oldie – and they weren’t alive to see Christie Brinkley is that “Uptown Girl” video either.
And while these kids might still be happy to get their groove on to Sir Mix-a-Lot’s 90s hit “Baby Got Back,” that came out when they were very little.
But their performance is for their peers at the end of the day and hits from their own lives make up the other half of the performance. Snippets from “Call Me Maybe,” “Gangnam Style,” and “Single Ladies” are followed by even more recent hits before the boys take a bow.
While the performance wasn’t made for the Internet, it still gets tens of thousands of hits a year since it’s one of the better “Evolution of Dance” performances.
And even if their moves don’t always match the music, they are gifted performers – and there’s even a backflip in there for good measure.
Most of the comments are praise for the shortest member of the group and there were plenty of teen girls commenting on how cool it is that guys can dance with such confidence (take note, teenage boys!).
“I wish a group of guys did this at my prom night, would’ve made the entire thing complete. Love the little guy, he’s got the moves alright,” said one commenter.
Time to start those dance lessons, gentlemen!
