3-year-old leukemia survivor becomes flower girl in her bone marrow donor's wedding

Weddings are wonderful events to celebrate the people we met and loved along the way.

We often invite our closest families and friends, workmates, teammates, or schoolmates to celebrate this special day.

But a bride invited someone special that’s not included in circles that knew her intimately. Nonetheless, this flower girl was more than a stranger to her.

Skye Savren-McCormick was suffering from a rare form of pediatric blood cancer.

According to Talia, Skye’s mom, Skye was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocyctic leukemia. The prognosis was dire because the only option for Skye’s survival is a bone marrow transplant. Even if she got a donor, the procedure would only have a 50% chance of success.

But Talia had to fight through the odds. They signed Skye up for the procedure where they began looking for donors for her.

Miles away, Hayden Ryals saw a booth of an organization on her college campus.

The booth says Be The Match. It was an organization that coordinates and manages a registry of bone marrow donors so that they can be properly matched with patients.

Ryals immediately underwent a cheek swab procedure and was added to the database. Then, one fateful day in April 2016, she received a call.

Savren-McCormick and Ryals were a match.

She was told that she was matched with a baby girl battling leukemia. At that point, she felt that it was one of the main culminating moments of her life.

“This was it. This was why I was created,” said Ryals to TODAY. “This child needed me — I was determined to do whatever it took to give her and her family a fighting chance.”

In July of 2016, the donation happened.

Because of Ryals, Skye no had the chance to fight through the illness. She defied all odds and survived. According to her mom, Skye was doing great.

Skye’s parents claim that Ryals saved their daughter’s life but Ryals said that Skye saved her too. She was at the lowest point in her life when she saw the donation drive and it gave her a purpose to push on.

It was no secret that they made a profound impact on each other’s lives.

So when they were allowed to contact each other, the two didn’t waste any time. When Skye’s birthday came around, Ryals sent her some gifts and something much more special.

She asked Skye to be one of her flower girls. It was a touching gesture and Skye’s parents were infinitely grateful. They were worried, however, that Skye won’t be healthy enough to go.

Then, as the days came closer, Skye received clearance from her doctor.

The two met each other for the first time in the wedding rehearsals. Ryals became emotional because Skye knew exactly who she was.

On her wedding day, 3-year-old Skye walked down the aisle scattering some petals. Skye’s parents said that it would’ve been meaningful just to meet the woman who saved their daughter but to be part of her wedding was magical.

“She saved my life and will always be my hero,” said Ryals to TODAY, “She has given me a new perspective on the world…she is everything to me.”
