8-year-old wants to attend daddy-daughter dance after losing father – so kind officer takes her
When you hear about a little girl who always wanted to go to the daddy-daughter dance, but never thought she’d be able to attend because her father passed away, you can’t help but feel sad for that girl.
That girl is Avey Cox, and her school’s resource officer, Nick Harvey, is the guy who wanted to change her destiny.
In Van Buren, Arkansas, the Corporal Harvey’s chief reached out to his officers and suggested they volunteer to escort students without dads.
This was such a great idea, and Harvey wanted to step up for Avey.
The 2nd grader had recently lost her father over the holidays and didn’t think she would be able to go.
“I was excited because I never went and I had been wanting to go,” Avey said.
To make this a proper invitation, Harvey had to get permission from Avey’s mother.
“I reached out to the mother, the last thing I wanted was to get rejected by a second-grader, and then the next day I formally asked if she’d be my date to the daddy/daughter dance,” Harvey said.
Avey said, “yes,” and the date was set.
Everyone involved wanted to make the event as special as they could for little Avey.
Together they coordinated their outfits, made sure to take tons of pictures to memorialize the dance, rode in a limo with their friends, and had a pizza dinner perfect for anyone.
“It meant a lot because I actually got to go and see all my friends there,” Cox told 5News before turning to Harvey and getting excited. “And then, I got to go with him and have a lot of fun.”
In the interview, you can tell they both were delighted to have been each other as a date for the event – and the smiles are infectious.
Harvey agreed that the night was extraordinary for him too.
The two made some great memories that night, and they danced together, regardless that neither felt they were great dancers.
“I embarrassed myself a little bit and danced when I can’t dance at all,” Harvey said with a laugh.
A beautiful moment was captured in the interview when Avey says,
“Me and him dancing…” before trailing off, sounding like her emotions were overcoming her.
Then Harvey reached out and hugged her.
It was such a sweet, innocent moment, and the friendship was so special.
Harvey could never replace her late father – but he sure allowed her some healing.
After the dance was over, the group continued the evening by making a stop for ice cream. Nothing better than pizza and ice cream for an 8-year-old. After the ice cream, Avey was escorted home in Harvey’s police cruiser.
Harvey was touched by the evening and made a promise to Avey, to always be there as an escort for any future dances. That way she’ll never have to worry about missing out on the experience.
Avey herself was inspired by Harvey and has told others that she hopes to one day be a police officer.
