Young girl finds out her grandpa is homeless then starts a nonprofit to help people like him
More than 500,000 people in America don’t know where to get their next meal or where they’ll spend the night. Homelessness is a big problem in the country and unfortunately, a lot of people aren’t even aware of it.
Addisyn Gross started an organization that aims to help ease the challenges that come with homelessness.
She started Snuggle Sacks. It provides basic commodities that the majority of homeless people have a hard time having access to. Together with her brother Jaxson and sister Sheridan, they distribute shampoos, fleece blankets, and socks. They also pack non-perishable food items and water.
Addisyn’s inspiration was her grandfather.
He was actually estranged from the family for a long time. When he was diagnosed with cancer, he felt that he needed to make amends with his family. He asked someone to look for them, particularly her daughter.
When Addisyn’s family went to visit him at a veteran’s facility in Indiana, she was shocked to learn all the things her grandfather went through. Without a family, he was forced to live on the streets for 6 years. He didn’t feel comfortable and the young girl knew that.
She shared:
“I was, like, thinking it was sad, because he got his leg amputated, too, during that time. So, I just really felt bad for him”.
Despite Addisyn’s young age, she fully understood what was happening.
In her heart, she knew she needed to do something to make sure people don’t get to experience what his grandfather went through.
That’s when Snuggle Sacks was born.
After their trip, Addisyn got to work. She asked her family and friends for donations so that they can fill several kits. With her siblings, they distributed them to shelters and local soup kitchens.
Addisyn’s aim wasn’t just to distribute survival kits to the homeless; she also wanted to raise public awareness about the problem and she’s still doing it today.
A few years after she started her non-profit organization, Addisyn continues to inspire people.
Even her own sister finds her amazing. She’s more than proud of what Addisyn has done at her age.
Sheridan shared:
“It’s incredible that my sister, younger than me, can come up with that and go through with it. And it just makes me really proud.”
The non-profit organization was able to make 40 homeless men and women happy during its first year. Now, more than 1000 survival kits for the homeless are being made and distributed per month. Addisyn has appeared on several television and radio programs, too. She hopes to have more people hear about the struggles of being homeless.
Her family is holding a soup kitchen, too.
Apart from distributing survival kits, the family aims to fill their hunger, too. In the process, they aren’t just meeting the physical and physiological needs of homeless people. They are actually making a huge difference in their lives. Their story is a great reminder for people to always have a caring heart.
