Heroic four-year-old finds “sleeping man on the floor” – alerts her mother and saves his life
Little Caleigh Concannon absolutely loves dogs.
The four-year-old adores pups so much that she convinced her mom Heather to bring her to volunteer at Golden Opportunities for Independence (GOFIDOG), a speciality farm that trains service dogs.
GOFIDOG aims to empower people with a disability with the love and help of both a service dog and mentor. The farm breeds and trains these beautiful helpers.
They focus on providing dogs to disabled individuals and fundraise $5,000 towards the cost of the canine helper. The farm also helps to lowering the cost of breeding and training a service dog, which can range between $15,000 and $35,000 depending on the kind of assistance a recipient needs.
Relying on volunteers like Caleigh and her mother is one of the ways the farm is able to lower their operational costs. It’s true what they say: many hands make light work!
One day when they were volunteering, Caleigh went to the bathroom on the farm. She happened to be in the right place at the right time, and ended up saving a man’s life.
She went in by herself, but saw something alarming. A man sleeping on the floor of the bathroom. She ran back to her mother for help.
“I ran back to my mom. And then I’m like, there’s someone sleeping on the floor.” – Heather
The man she thought was having a nap on the floor of the bathroom, turned out to be the farm’s Director of Operations, Michael Flynn. And he wasn’t snoozing… he was having an epileptic seizure.
Caleigh was able to quickly realize something was wrong with the man because of her own father’s condition.
“My dad has diabetes.” – Caleigh
Caleigh was aware that her dad’s diabetes could sometimes cause him to pass out, and she had been trained on how to handle the situation if it ever happened in front of her.
This training helped her identify that the man on the floor was in a troublesome situation like her dad could be.
“She figured out he was having a seizure, and she called the ambulance and stuff like that. She knew exactly what to do, and she’s four years old.” – Heather
Caleigh had always been a fantastic little volunteer, but Michael could never have known she would one day save his life.
Thankfully Caleigh knew to call 911 in an emergency!
Who knows how devastating the outcome could have been if she hadn’t been there to help.
“I am so proud of her. I am just in awe at the responsibility and the seriousness and her perception in handling the situation.” – Heather
The Walpole Police Department was so impressed with young Caleigh’s actions, that they presented her with a Community Hero Award.
“The situation could have been a lot worse than it was and so as a result, she really is a community hero.” – Police Chief John Carmichael
Even some adults would have panicked in that situation, and might not have known what to do. But Caleigh responded so quickly that she saved a life!
Watch the video below and see how perceptive and mature Caleigh is for her age, and how she faced this harrowing situation.
