Little girl sets up a fairy garden outside her house and draws the attention of a magical friend
In April of 2020, when the COVID pandemic lockdown still seemed new and yet neverending, people looked for ways to cope with boredom, loneliness, and frustration.
One little girl in Los Angeles found a creative way to cope – and it happened to catch the eye of the perfect person, leading to a heartwarming interaction that will leave her believing in fairies for quite some time.
The Fairy Garden
4-year-old Eliana loves fairies and as a way to be creative and stay busy during the lockdown, she and her parents made a little fairy garden in front of their house.

It came with a decorative sign that read:
“Our 4 year old girl made this to brighten your day
Please add to the magic but don’t take away
These days can be hard, but we’re in this together
So enjoy our fairy garden and some nice weather”
down my street and noticed that someone had set up a few little objects in a tree planter and upon closer inspection I realized it was a fairy garden with a little note about the 4 year old girl who felt lonely in quarantine and wanted to spread some cheer. No doubt anyone who stumbled upon the garden was charmed, but it meant just a bit extra to photographer Kelly Kenney.

Kenney, a photographer, had just gone through some personal issues and was also lonely during the lockdown. Even worse, she suffered from insomnia. But she took those nighttime moments to get some fresh air and walk around the neighborhood when no one else was around.
Sapphire the Fairy
“I was walking down my street and noticed that someone had set up a few little objects in a tree planter, and upon closer inspection I realized it was a fairy garden with a little note about the 4-year-old girl who felt lonely in quarantine and wanted to spread some cheer,” Kenney wrote on Twitter.
That’s when she decided to give Eliana a little surprise – a note from a fairy. Taking on the role of a fairy named “Sapphire,” Kenney said she was one of the fairies that lived in the garden’s tree and gave the little girl a set of tasks in order to earn some “magical fairy dice.”

After that, the pair began a 9-month friendship that allowed Kenney and Eliana to feel less alone.
“I was going through a really hard time,” Kenney told Good Morning America. “I didn’t even realize at first how much it lifted my spirits. … Once I realized that I was coming home with a purpose every night and started doing this, I realized it was actually doing a lot for me also. And I was like, I had things to look forward to. I was excited to do something.”
Taking on the tasks
The tasks that Kenney asked were to “say five nice things to people you love, do three helpful things for someone in need, promise to always be kind and brave, and to show love to those in need and to draw a picture of your favorite animal so she could show the other fairies.”
Eliana was thrilled to take on the task, of course, and when Kenney saw her reply the following say she says she “burst into tears.”
So I left a bunch of my die that had small imperfections and left her another note and also a little extra note for her parents with my name and phone number so they could contact me and know I wasn’t some creep leaving notes for their small child: pic.twitter.com/89B5PcpxBa

Kenney made sure to leave the 4-year-old her fairy dice along with a note for the girl’s parents.
Eliana’s mom, Emily, told CBS News that she couldn’t be more grateful for the gesture.
“We were constantly floored, like just completely floored. The gifts that she would give were just so personal, so kind, and we were just like, ‘We don’t even know you!'” she said.
For months, the two kept up their correspondence, even after Kenney moved to a new neighborhood.
A Magical Meeting
In December, Eliana’s family was preparing to move as well. Of course, the little girl was sad to leave behind her garden and its magical tree. That’s when her parents approached “Sapphire the fairy” about a possible meeting before they left.
In the past month her mom sent me a text letting me know that they had closed escrow on a new house a little further away and would have to leave the fairy garden behind in the care of their neighbors. She also mentioned that Eliana was having a tough time with it so I made sure pic.twitter.com/PuulHuy0VC

Normally quite shy, Eliana jumped at the chance to meet Sapphire when her mother brought it up.
Then, Sapphire left one last note, telling the little girl that she was moving and that, as a fairy, that meant she could become human-sized for one day in order to get to her new home.
Of course, it wasn’t easy to set up the meeting. Everyone had to quarantine and take a COVID-19 test before the careful meeting. But that didn’t make the result any less magical.
more gift for her and would leave it this afternoon and hoped 😉 she wouldn’t catch me. As they came back from their last walk around their neighborhood I was by the tree leaving her gift and she got to catch me in the act. (I got tested two days ago and her pic.twitter.com/ZpsCzEDdwI

Eliana finally met Sapphire in person. She and her mom were returning from a walk when Eliana spotted “Sapphire” leaving her one last gift. Eliana approached her and was blown away when she confirmed Sapphire’s identity.
“We got to sit and talk for about an hour and she asked me a million questions about what life is like as a fairy,” Kenney wrote on Twitter. “It was incredible and one of the most important and impactful afternoons of my life thus far.”
The two parted ways that day but vowed to keep in touch by letter.
We plan to keep in touch/write letters to each other from time to time. She’s changed me forever and the things her mom has said about how her self-confidence, her kindness towards others and her creativity have skyrocketed since meeting me make me feel like I made an impact too. pic.twitter.com/UNkhkrEcR7

I think everyone could use a lighthearted/happy story right now so here goes:
At the beginning of the pandemic I went through some painful personal stuff and would often go out at night for long walks because no one was around and I couldn’t sleep anyway. One night I was walking
