Kind cop takes grieving 8-year-old girl who lost her father to her daddy-daughter dance
Many little girls dream of attending a daddy-daughter dance with their fathers, but when 8-year-old Avey Cox’s father passed away, she thought she would not get to attend this special occasion. Thanks to an Arkansas cop, Avey’s dream of attending a daddy-daughter dance was fulfilled
A police officer steps up to help out
In a show of compassion, Van Buren, Arkansas school resource officer Nick Harvey Stepped up to the plate, offering to take her in her father’s stead. But first, he had to get permission.
“I reached out to the mother because the last thing I wanted was to get rejected by a second-grader, and then the next day I formally asked if she’d be my date to the daddy/daughter dance,” Harvey told KFSM.
Planning for the big night
As for Avey, she was excited when Harvey asked her to go. She had always wanted to attend the dance at her school but feared she would never be able to after her father’s passing. Soon, after accepting Harvey’s invitation, the two got together to coordinate their outfits.
Dancing their hearts out
On the big night, the two, along with other fathers and daughters took photos before getting into a stretch limousine for the ride to the dance. Once there, the pair danced their hearts out alongside the other elementary students and their teachers.
The specialness of the father-daughter dance
A particularly special moment of the night was when Harvey and Avey danced the father-daughter dance. A video of this special moment was posted online and soon had gone viral,
“It meant a lot because I actually got to go and see all my friends there,” Cox told 5News. “And then, I got to go with him and have a lot of fun.”
Harvey was quick to agree on how special the night was and it was one that he wouldn’t soon forget. He and Avey were able to make a lot of wonderful memories both on and off the dance floor.
“I embarrassed myself a little bit and danced when I can’t dance at all,” Harvey said with a laugh.
A night to remember
After the dance, Harvey, Avey, and a group of her classmates went out to get ice cream. Then Avey was driven home in Harvey’s police car. Officer Harvey serves as a perfect example of kindness in the world, with everyone online feeling just how pure and meaningful his kind gesture was.
