Most of us are lucky enough to spend most of our time with our loved ones. But sometimes, life gets in the way of what you really want, and all you can do is try your best to make it work.

Long-distance relationships can be particularly challenging to deal with.

The foundations of a relationship are built on communication. Although we have technology that can help us communicate better than ever nowadays, the lack of physical proximity is still difficult.

Yes, video calling one another is nice, but it’s not quite the same as giving your partner a cuddle or holding their hand.

So when you do get the chance to meet in person, the moment is incredibly special – and, understandably, very emotional.

Living long-distance is even harder when you’re more than 2,600 miles apart, like the couple on this video.

According to the video’s caption, the girlfriend lives in America, while her boyfriend is based in Colombia.

The pair had been separated for two years, and the girlfriend decided to surprise her boyfriend with an unexpected return home.

Of course, moments like these usually end up getting filmed, giving the couple a happy memory to look back on.

In the video, the boyfriend is sitting at a table at a restaurant, using his phone.

In the background, we can see a young woman approaching. As she gets closer, she puts her own phone back in her pocket, and her boyfriend hangs up, looking a little confused.

As he looks down at his phone, his girlfriend creeps up behind him and puts his hands over his eyes.

Though we can’t see his expression, it’s easy to imagine that he’s probably already clocked on.

There aren’t many strangers who would be comfortable enough to put their hands over your eyes, after all!

As if to check that it’s really who he thinks it is, the boyfriend runs his hands over his girlfriend’s fingers. According to the caption, this was to identify her by the rings he had bought for her.

Finally, the girlfriend removes her hands, and the pair have a long, sweet embrace.

If you can relate all too well to this couple, you might be in need of a bit of advice for maintaining a long-distance relationship.

Making – and sticking to – communication arrangements is the most important thing.

Keeping a physical item that reminds you of your partner will also give you proximal reminders of their presence.

Make sure you balance your commitment to your relationship carefully. While these relationships do take sacrifice, you don’t want to build resentment. That could end up dampening the enjoyment when the pair of you finally reunite in person.
