Schools are known for teaching a variety of subjects, including math, science, and various languages. Most students, though, are left lacking when it comes to life skills, such as taking care of a household, paying their bills, or taking care of their car.

A school in New South Wales, Australia has been teaching its students some important life skills to help them deal with real-life situations.

Learning important life skills

Students from Stella Maris College have been learning how to take care of a vehicle, namely how to check their oil and tire pressure. More importantly, the class also learned how to change a tire, as stated on a post on the college’s Facebook page.

“Our Year 11 girls today were taught some essential DIY car maintenance skills by Galmatic; how to change a tire and check tire pressure, how to check oil, water, and coolant levels, what to do in in the event of a minor car crash and so much more.”

GalMatic is a foundation that has made its goal to provide important car maintenance skills to women and new, teenage drivers. The hope is to give them the skills they need to take care of some common car maintenance issues themselves and save them the stress of having to take their vehicle to a mechanic.

GalMatic teaches about 100,000 teenagers in the Sydney area each year. The course is taught by a staff of all women trainers who have decades of experience in teaching and working with young drivers.

The importance of learning about car maintenance

By knowing what to do, the young women in the class can take care of their cars themselves, especially if they are stuck in an emergency on the side of the road. Many feel that the school’s efforts will have a positive effect on the lives of its students.

Hope for the future

The hope is that even more schools will follow suit in teaching students important life skills. The ultimate aim of the program is to instill confidence and a sense of independence in the school’s students.
