Group of 30+ dancers line up for The Git Up Challenge and show anyone can do it

Just because we’ve entered a new decade doesn’t mean the 2019 trend of participating in The Git Up Challenge is in the past.

And the challenge videos – submitted by everyone from first responders and physicians to kids and their parents – are still being uploaded and viewed by hundreds of thousands of people each day on social media sites from Tik Tok and YouTube.

If you haven’t got a clue what we’re talking about, the synchronized dance craze is based on the country-rap song “The Git Up,” by Blanco Brown.

The “challenge” is to simply do the coordinated dance described in the lyrics. Sounds easy enough, right?

Try this:

“Go’n and do the two-step, then cowboy boogie // Grab your sweetheart and spin out with ’em // Do the hoedown and get into it // Take it to the left now and dip with it // Go’n throw down, take a sip with it // Now lean back, put your hips in it // Let’s have some fun.”

If you don’t feel ready to dive right into filming yourself after hearing that description, luckily Blanco Brown released a video with all of the steps so you can break it down.

The dance is pretty easy, which is part of the reason so many people have learned it and uploaded their performances (for better or worse). It’s also the reason we’re starting to see it at proms and weddings – everyone, no matter what their age, can participate. And to top it off, the moves aren’t risque in any way. It’s basically line dancing.

For those who need a better teacher than the Internet, there are places like the Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn in Renton, Washington.

A video they posted – presumably of folks who aren’t typically involved in dance – shows the fruits of a lesson by one of their instructors. In it, people of all ages work their way through the steps – and it’s another great instructional video if Brown’s doesn’t work for you.

(If you’re truly rhythm-challenged, the instructor has broken it down further in this video.)

The group is led by an instructor in a cowboy hat who enters the room to a round of high-fives. His class is pumped up and ready to go! And the dance school looks like a fun and non-judgemental place for people of all ages and abilities to learn some new moves.

Commenters are loving the video, which gives them hope that they too might be able to “Git Up” at the next wedding they attend:

“Wow! Thank you so much. You just proved that stiff people like me can still dance to this song. Loved it,” said one.

This class looks to be full of beginners. They know the steps, they’re confident enough to film themselves, but they still have some time to add their own special “spice” to the dance.

There’s definitely room for freestyling in the challenge, but it’s not mandatory – it might take a martini or two at an event to get some people to loosen up.

For now, it looks like the dance challenge is here to stay (move over, Electric Slide!), so you never know when the song might come on at the next wedding you attend.

Maybe it’s time to learn a few moves.

But in the meantime, be sure to scroll down and watch students from the Rockin’ Horse Dance Barn get down to “The Git Up.”
