“God” responds to grieving little girl who sent a letter after her dog passed away

Death takes the weightiest of tolls on the lives of those left behind. Though it is just another turn in the cycle of life, it’s one that we never really get used to or “better” at handling. It’s the conversations that you’ll never get the chance to have any more, and the distinct facial expressions you’ll never experience in this life again. The way you felt in their presence. It’s all gone, and we are left obliterated by the impact of their absence, struggling just to pick up the pieces.

One little girl was struggling with the loss of her dog and decided to write a letter to God to make sure she got to Heaven.

Meridith Scrivener was only 4-years-old at the time when she had to say goodbye to her family dog in 2006.

The black and white senior dog was 14-years-old when she passed, but that didn’t seem like a long enough time for Meredith. She missed her dog Abbey terribly and was having trouble trying to cope with it.

Abbey had been with Meredith since she was just a baby and, over the years, their bond only grew deeper. Meredith believed that her sweet dog would go onto Heaven and feel better, but she was worried about how she would find her way. Meredith believed that God would love Abbey every bit as much as she did herself, but she needed to be sure He would recognize her.

So, with that in mind, she got her mom to write a letter to God so Meredith could tell Him what she had to say.

Including several pictures of her beloved dog so that God would know who she was talking about, Meredith asked that He take extra special care of her girl.

When her mom had finished writing the letter, Meredith sealed the envelope with extra postage stamps, because it would take a lot of them to get to Heaven. Here is what she said:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love,

Meredith

When they were done sealing up the letter, Meredith’s mom, Joy, took her down to the Brook Hollow post office in Texas to drop the letter in the mailbox.

Though Joy figured that would be all there was to the story, she was in for quite the surprise.

Roughly two weeks after sending the letter, Meredith asked her mom if the letter had made it all the way to Heaven by then.

Joy comforted Meredith by saying she was sure that it had and that Abbey was being well taken care of now. Then, they returned home one day to find a large package wrapped in gold paper with a note that simply read “To: Mer, from God and one of his special angels”.

There was no return address on the package but she let her daughter open it anyway. What she found was the book “When a Pet Dies” by Mr. Rogers. Attached to the cover were the photos Meredith sent of Abbey, and beneath it was a letter to her from God.

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.

By the way, I’m easy to find, I am wherever there is love.

Love,

God

After reading the beautiful letter, Meredith and her mom spent the evening reminiscing about their wonderful dog that had become family. They cried, as could only be expected when trying to wrap your head around the loss of a loved one. There is no doubt, though, that the letter from the mysterious post office “angel” had comforted her immensely.
