Golden Retriever heroically saves bald eagle from freezing to death

Dogs are one of the smartest and most empathic animals in the world. It’s normal to see one caring for the humans they love but it’s another to watch a dog selflessly help an animal he could easily prey on.

This is the story of a 3-year-old Golden Retriever from Duluth, Minnesota that goes by the name Kenai.

One fine day, Kenai, together with her human, Kerrie, were walking out in the snow when Kenai suddenly became agitated.

Kerrie and her friend named Pam were initially confused but it was not long after when they realized what was causing the dog’s agitation.

Apparently, a bald eagle was perched on a branch near the waters. It was as if the brilliant dog knew that the eagle was injured and was in a dangerous situation.

Kenai began barking at the eagle and even tried to come closer to it. Since the eagle found Kerrie as a threat, just like any eagle would, it kept on hopping away from the canine.

Since it was starting to get darker and darker, the humans made the decision to come home for safety and just come back the next day to complete the rescue mission.

True enough, they all returned the next day first thing in the morning. However, the bald eagle was nowhere in sight.

Fortunately, they soon realized that a trail of footprints was left. They patiently followed the footprints and finally found the eagle further up the shore.

They immediately contacted the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to report the situation and two women were sent to the site to rescue the injured eagle.

Not long after, they successfully rescued the bird!

The bald eagle was then taken to Wildwoods for care and rehabilitation. As per the animal rehabilitation’s Facebook page, the eagle was “chilled and his feathers were frozen” when they initially saw it.

After a meticulous evaluation, the bird was found to be suffering from a shoulder injury. They provided him with lots of fluids and warmed him up to the ideal temperature.

When the bald eagle was in a better condition, Kerrie and Pam transported it to Raptor Center in St. Paul. After another round of examination, they, unfortunately, found out that the bird was suffering from lead poisoning.

Thankfully though, the center believes that the eagle will be able to fully recover.

Huge thanks to the group’s effort for saving the precious bald eagle.

Although it was Pam and Kerrie who rescued the bird, they said that they owe everything to Kenai’s senses for successfully spotting and locating the injured eagle. Otherwise, it will be left to suffer a freezing death.

Kenai truly is a hero for intelligently identifying the bald eagle’s situation. Dogs are truly one of the smartest animals on the planet!
