10-year-old and grandfather earn 2.5 million views tap dancing to the “Cup Song”

Jaime Casey Jones first posted a clip of her father-in-law and 10-year-old daughter Maeve to Facebook only to see it go viral immediately.

When she posted the whole video the next day, it exploded. And since 2018, it’s been viewed 11 million times on her Facebook page and over 3.6 million times on YouTube.

It all started when Maeve asked her 72-year-old grandfather to enter her dance school’s tap duo during their summer recital.

“After only 6 classes to learn and practice (choreographed by Elyse Williamson of From The Top Dance Center) this is their recital performance,” Jones said.

Bill Jones was all too happy to oblige.

“They’re probably aren’t too many tap-dancing grandfathers around,” he told WHDH News. “I was very proud to do it, and I was surprised at the response.”

And Maeve is certainly glad she asked.

“It’s crazy,” Maeve told WHDH. “My mom says my grandfather loves to dance, and I asked him if he wanted to do a tap duel with me, and we did it. And it’s amazing.”

But dancing runs in the family, so maybe no one should be all that surprised that the pair knocked their performance out of the ballpark. It turns out Jones’ mother was a professional dancer.

“(She) was in vaudeville, probably burlesque, and my father danced, and I danced with him when I was 4 years old,” he said. “So [Maeve]’s like the fifth generation down from my grandmother.”

Happy to put on his dancing shoes again, Jones went all out for the performance, even pulling off a cartwheel!

“I decided to do a cartwheel again. I hadn’t done them in a while,” he said. “I used to do a bunch of other tricks, but that’s the last trick I have left.”

Maeve had no idea her grandfather would step up the way he did – that cartwheel was especially impressive to the pre-teen.

“I was really surprised,” she said. “I had no idea he could do one.”

Even Maeve’s dance instructor was shocked at the performance.

“I was actually surprised at how well Bill could tap,” said Elyse Williamson. “So they kept surprising me what they could handle when I gave them choreography.”

At the time when the pair made news around the country, Jones hoped it wouldn’t be the last time he danced with his granddaughter. And he sure got his wish!

After two more of their videos went viral they got invited to perform on Good Morning America.

They were also chosen by none other than The Rockettes as “dancers of the week” that year.

“After six rehearsals, Maeve and her grandfather were ready to take the stage, tapping it out to the hit song “Cups” from the movie Pitch Perfect. The pair showed off flaps, time steps, and even ended the performance with their own show-stopping cartwheels!” said the legendary dancers’ website.

The aspiring actress and dancer also appeared with her grandfather on Disney’s Fam Jam earlier this year, so the duo is still happily dancing together.

If the comments on Jamie Casey Jones’ post are correct, the duo even won $10,000!

That’s some serious family talent.
