A few years back in 2016, a sweet little grandma named Wanda Dench sent out an invite to Thanksgiving dinner via a text message. The invite detailed what time Thanksgiving dinner was going to be held at her place, and she thought she had sent the text message to her grandson. In reality, she sent it to the wrong teen.

Rather than her own grandkid, she’d actually sent the invite to a teen named Jamal Hinton.

Being 16-years-old at the time, Jamal thought it’d be funny to send her a reply.

Jamal responded to Wanda’s invite by asking who she was. When she said she was his grandma, he decided he wanted proof. He asked her to send him a picture and Wanda, thinking it was her grandkid still, shot him a quick selfie from work.

“You not my grandma 😮😂☠” Jamal repsonded.

Even though the teen displayed his amusement by throwing a few emojis into his response, he didn’t exactly decline the invitation.

In fact, the teen asked her if the invitation was still open! What makes the whole incident so heartwarming is Wanda’s kind and fast reply.

“Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do…feed every one 🍰”

Now things just got weird for the teen.

Jamal was left wondering whether or not he should accept the extended invite, especially since she responded so kindly to his request for a plate. After thinking it over, the teen decided to meet up with the sweet grandma before the holiday to feel her out a bit. When he realized that she really was just a kind soul, Jamal took her up on her offer.

“What made me want to go was that I went and actually met her and she was pretty nice. So I decided that I’d just go and enjoy the time with her. It turned out to be a great thing,” he shared.

Thankfully, he made the right decision.

Luckily for Jamal, Wanda turned out to know her way around a kitchen and she served him up a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. Apparently, Wanda’s Turkey and green bean casserole are some truly choice dishes. It wasn’t just the dinner that was great, though. The teen actually really enjoys spending time with her and they became fast friends.

Ever since they spent their first Thanksgiving together 3 years ago, Jamal has always had a spot at Wanda’s table on Thanksgiving.

Though he’d hoped to host the dinner himself this year, he and his girlfriend were in the middle of moving to a new apartment and had to put it on hold until the following year. It hasn’t taken away from the holiday fun in the least, though, as Jamal and his girlfriend gathered round to play the monopoly game that Wanda gave him last year.

Not only have Jamal and Wanda been able to maintain the friendship they formed a few holiday seasons ago, but it’s even grown since then!

This year, Jamal and Mikaela met up with Wanda and her husband for an early Christmas dinner. They exchanged gifts, and Jamal and his girlfriend gave them vinyl printed sweaters they made themselves!

The friendship that Jamal and Wanda share is just proof that when you remain open to new people coming into your life, great things can come of it!
