Babies love to communicate. Of course, it takes them a while to learn and form words, but that doesn’t stop them. This baby is a prime example.

The baby was having a great day. His grandmother had come over and, as usual, she was giving him so much attention.

Then the grandmother put her grandson in her lap and asked him a question. “Now tell me something. Did they show you how to build a snowman?”

The baby turned to his grandmother and said something like, “Oh, yeah.”

That was about the limit of his understandable words at the time. Then the baby tried to carry on the conversation.

The baby babbled on cutely. At one point, it sounded like he was trying to say, “Dada.” So was he saying that his dad showed him?

Then the grandmother responded to this baby talk by asking, “Did they give you a hat to put on the snowman?”

Again, the baby started off his conversation with, “Oh yeah,” and then carried on babbling away enthusiastically, this time finishing his sentence with laughter.

“Was it your hat?” The grandmother asked.

The baby paused this time, thinking up a response. And then he started babbling away again.

“And what did they make the eyes out of?” followed up the grandmother.

The baby then started babbling for a long time. Clearly, this simple question had a very complex answer.

The grandmother kept on asking her grandson all about his day out in the snow.

The baby kept on responding to her with fluent baby talk. Eventually, the grandmother couldn’t hold back laughter.

She then kissed her grandson.

The baby’s dad then forgot about this video for over a decade. Then one day, when he was looking at some old tapes, he rediscovered it and uploaded it to YouTube.

He was heart-warmed when he saw that people all over the world had loved the video. To date, the video has gained over 930,000 views. It also has more than 18,000 likes and 1,000 comments. People have been saying things like this:

The dad then explained how, sadly, the grandmother had passed away several years ago. He also said that she was even more wonderful than she seemed to be in the video.

The baby in this video was 18 months old. It was highly likely that he understood a lot of what his grandmother was asking him. By 18 months, most babies can speak 10 different words. But they usually understand a whole lot more. For instance, most babies at this age will be able to point to parts of the body that they are not yet able to say.

Of course, there’s one vital thing that all parents should do to help their children with their language development: read to them!

It makes sense. At around 18 months of age, they really like being read to. Naturally, reading to babies gives them a huge advantage when it comes to learning words!
