Grandfather and granddaughters shuffle into people’s hearts with their dance moves

The shuffle? The charleston? The Carleton? A little bit of tap dancing?

This trio has mastered all of the above. In fact, there’s even a bit of modified moonwalking going on!

A video of an elderly but sprightly man and (presumably) his two granddaughters was posted to Twitter back in 2017 by a Japanese Twitter user with the handle @malatang2015. And while the account no longer exists, the video lives on.

It’s been viewed millions of times on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.

In the original, the song they are dancing to is a common one in Chinese plazas. It’s called “Grassland Love Song” (草原情歌 Cǎoyuán Qínggē).

Of course, dozens of viewers have remixed the video (and even sped it up) to match their own favorite beats.

While we don’t actually know anything concrete about the dancers – we don’t even know if they realize they went viral – it’s fair to say that “grandpa” has become an Internet sensation.

These three really have the moves!

In perfect unison, they execute a series of dance steps that take quite some practice. And the man in the middle is delightfully light on his feet (something we’d easily expect from the young ones beside him).

It appears this isn’t the man’s only public shuffle either.

In fact, he looks to be the same man in another video dancing alongside a teen (though she is also labeled as his granddaughter in video descriptions). Unfortunately, the video is grainy and we can’t be certain.

They sure do look like the same moves though!

Some have identified the dance as the Melbourne shuffle, though there seems to be quite a bit of improvisation if that’s true.

What we do know is that this man has clearly been keeping limber through dance over the years. How else could one move so flawlessly?

Not only did his performance encourage commenters to watch the videos over and over again, but some even mulled the idea of taking up dancing themselves. The grooves are infectious, after all.

“Grandpa is a smooth dancer. His timing, balance and foot work is awesome to watch,” wrote one Facebook commenter. “The best thing you can do is get up and move at his age. Grandpa should do his own work out dance video. I would buy it.”

Looks like some serious calorie burning if you ask us!

While we can’t confirm it ourselves, some commenters have said that public dancing such as this is quite common in China:

“Typical China. Every weekend or even during weekdays in the evening you see people dancing – all ages mixed, everybody doing their own thing. Nobody laughs, nobody has cynical remarks. This is what we love about China.”

It’s strange that two videos of the man could go viral with no further information, but it could also be the case that people simply want to enjoy the performance without knowing much more.

If The Daily Mail is to be believed, then the video actually took place in Hong Kong. That means labeling it “Chinese” is making quite the political statement. But they seem to be basing that on the fact that the first version of the video they tracked down was posted by a Hong Kong-based social media account.

We may never know who the man is or where the dancers are from – but we do know that they make us want to get up and dance!
