Little girl's grave is built with a staircase so her mother could comfort her during storms
What does love really feel like? I’m sure that you know how it feels especially if you are a mom.
A mother’s love is just so powerful and incomparable.
Every mom knows that they can do everything for their children. They are willing to take action and sacrifice everything they have just to protect their kids.
A story of a 10-year-old girl manifested how powerful a mother’s love is.
This little girl was named Florence Irene Ford and she passed away in 1871 due to yellow fever. She left the world so early so imagine how painful it was for her mom to lose her.
Nevertheless, her mother named Ellen did not stop loving her even when they were no longer together.
She even made her grave special and more accessible for her.
This grave became known as “unusual grave” but the moment you hear the story behind it, it will surely touch your heart.
Florence’s grave is in Natchez City Cemetery – which is located in Mississippi. Her mom couldn’t bear the pain after she passed away so she wanted her grave to be a place that would make her feel closer to her.
The grieving mom requested it to have a small window installed on the head part of her daughter’s casket.
Aside from that, it also had stairs that would allow her to go down to the window fitted at the head of her child’s coffin.
The grave had remained that way for many years. But in 1950, the glass window was covered by a concrete wall to avoid potential acts of vandalism.
Losing someone is never easy.
And people have different ways of coping with grief. For Florence’s mom, what she did is unusual but definitely understandable. That’s her way to make herself feel better. She wanted to protect her late child at all costs.
According to Teens Health, there are 5 ways to handle the pain of losing someone.
Joining rituals is one of them. Memorial services and funerals somehow help a bereaved person cope with pain.
“Just being in the presence of other people who knew your loved one can be comforting.”
Aside from that, expressing what you really feel helps a lot too.
Don’t be afraid to cry and release deep emotional pain. It’s natural and it’s valid. Don’t force yourself to move on quickly if that’s not what you really feel.
Preserving memories is also part of the Teens Health list. This is what Florence’s mom exactly did.
She created her daughter’s grave as a tribute to her and it’s beyond memorable. No wonder why many people also went to that special place even though they don’t know the mother and daughter personally. Their story probably touched these people’s hearts.
Teens Health also suggested joining a support group. It’s great to meet people who understand what you feel. Don’t endure the pain alone, because you are not alone.
There are people out there who would love to hear your story and comfort you the most sincere way possible.
