Home intruder breaks into home and is quickly thwarted by Great Dane

Dubai is a very good boy and owner Tracy McCoy couldn’t be happier for her Great Dane.

The 122 pound Great Dane saved her owner and her son when an intruder entered Tracy’s home. It happened on a Monday afternoon at her home in Oklahoma City.

Tracy was at home with her son Nathaniel when she heard a door open. Her son is blind and it was Dubai who went out to check until Tracy says,

“I looked up and came face-to-face with a stranger.”

Nathaniel had no idea what was happening until he heard his mother scream.

It was that scream that alerted the huge dog.

“The instant that I screamed, Dubai understood that that person was not welcome here,” said McCoy

Security cameras caught suspect Robert Ward, 30, entering Tracy’s home only to be met by Dubai. The dog even tried to befriend the stranger, getting a few pets from Ward.

“It was in broad daylight,” said McCoy. “Just came in like he owned the place.”

But the moment Tracy screamed, Dubai took action and took a bite out of Robert’s plans. Literally.

The Great Dane bit the man on the bottom and pushed him towards the door. At one point the large dog went for the man’s face. Ward immediately took off while Tracy called 911.

“He is not a vicious dog, he’s very, very sweet,” said McCoy. “But the instant that I screamed, Dubai understood that that person was not welcome here.”

She got a good description of the suspect and said officers were not far from her downtown home.

“They were able to find him because I was able to tell them what direction he went. It was pretty remarkable. Now we know what he’ll do in times of crisis.”

Luckily for Tracy, there were police officers nearby. It didn’t take long before Robert came back, this time in the back of a squad car.

“Officers that were responding to the scene spotted the man in the area walking in the neighborhood and took him into custody,” said MSgt. Gary Knight.

Tracy was there to identify the intruder. Dubai probably wanted more of the suspect too!

A day or so later, Tracy and her son, Nathaniel, were still pretty shaken up by the experience. Dubai may have been as well but he’s a big, strong boy and he won’t ever allow anyone to harm his humans.

“It changes everything. It changes how you feel. It changes your level of security. It changes your confidence at that moment” said McCoy.

She took the citizens’ police academy early last year, saying she knew what exactly to say when she called 911.

Robert Ward now faces a first-degree burglary charge, a bruised ego, and bite marks from a huge dog. They may have the size and strength, but Great Danes are generally sweet, affectionate dogs. Just don’t threaten their owners.
