Intruder cozies up to Great Dane, but when mom screams the dog bolts into protective action

Imagine a complete stranger walking right into your home in the middle of the day. The gall!

For most, it would be terrifying AND confusing. Who does that? Are they on drugs? Are they there to hurt you?

Oklahoma City resident Tracey McCoy faced exactly that scenario in January when a man strolled through a door in her home in broad daylight.

And while she has her 122-pound Great Dane named Dubai to thank for “escorting him out,” the intruder – Robert Ward – actually stopped to pet the dog after he barged in!

And while Dubai is the hero in this story, he was also kind of a Great Dane about it in more than one way.

At first, Dubai happily stood by for attention, letting Ward pet his head and stroke his body.

To be fair, there was no ruckus or drama and one doesn’t train a dog to attack just anyone who comes through the door.

Despite their size, they’re friendly and gentle dogs and the way Ward simply waltzed in gave the pup no cause for concern – at least not at first.

It was only when Ward turned a corner and encountered McCoy, who was home alone with her blind son, that Dubai realized something was wrong.

McCoy screamed and it finally hit the dog that this man was an unwanted intruder.

Then he did another thing Great Danes are great at – he went into guard dog mode to protect his family.

“He immediately did an about-face literally and started after the gentleman, and he escorted him out by the rear end with his teeth,” McCoy told KFOR News.

Atta boy!

McCoy was pretty brave herself, not backing off as she followed the dog to the door until Ward left and then securely locked it while calling the police.

She said she was grateful to have taken a citizens’ police academy course last year, so she knew what language to use to most efficiently get the information to her 911 operator.

In the meantime, she watched the intruder run – but not very far.

In fact, he did come back – but this time in a police cruiser rather than on foot.

“Officers that were responding to the scene spotted the man in the area walking in the neighborhood and took him into custody,” said MSgt. Gary Knight.

And it’s lucky for McCoy the police were already in the neighborhood. Officers nabbed him quickly, put him in the back of the police car, and immediately came back to McCoy’s home to have her positively ID the criminal.

Now, the family is reeling from the incident and can only be grateful that it wasn’t much worse.

Of course, it’s normal to think about all the things that might have been.

“It changes everything. It changes how you feel. It changes your level of security. It changes your confidence at that moment” said McCoy.

Dubai, of course, looked fairly chill after the whole event. He did his duty.

But let’s not neglect the fact that he also had his tiny backup fur brother there to bite any unsuspecting ankles that may have needed encouragement to head out the door.

It looks like McCoy and her son are well-protected.

There’s no further information on what Ward was thinking or what he was planning that day, but the last news available said the 30-year-old was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary.

No word on whether his rear end needed some ice or stitches after his encounter with Dubai.
