Blind senior pit bull overwhelmed with joy when dad puts in her new contact lenses
Losing your sight is never a happy experience. The colorful world you once knew is now covered in darkness. That’s why many people go to the eye doctor to have their vision cleared by using glasses or medical procedures.
This is the same way with senior dogs.
Elderly dogs can lose their eyesight too. Some of the causes of vision loss in elderly dogs are glaucoma, cataract, and macular degeneration. For a senior Pit Bull named Gremlin, she suffered from a cataract which is when the lens of the eye is clouded over.
Gremlin lost her eyesight when she lost her eyesight due to complications in cataract surgery.
Her world was getting darker but she was a brave dog. You see, Gremlin lived a difficult life. She was thought to be 4 years old when she was rescued and got adopted after a few years.
Aside from living in a shelter for years, Gremlin also survived a number of complications such as cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and babesia.
That’s why her human parents Chris and Mariesa Hughes dedicated their lives to saving animals like her. They run a rescue project called Mr Mo Project. which is a New York-based nonprofit organization that saves animals from shelters and gives them to “fospice” homes, so they can live in a loving homes.
Chris and Mariesa love their dogs specially Gremlin, that’s why they decided to help her with her eyesight problems.
“They are our family and we have made a promise to them to give them the best life we can,” said Chris.
They immediately went to the vet when they noticed signs of cataracts in her eyes. So, Gremlin underwent surgery. However, there were multiple complications.
Her right eye became too painful which resulted in her blindness. She was given an injection to alleviate the pain, but it resulted in her not seeing well. She also became farsighted.
Often times, she would bump into a lot of things.
Hence, she avoided playing with her siblings. It was a sad experience for the family because Gremlin was just a shade of her former self.
“That was the worst. You don’t want to go to love on your dog and have her be absolutely scared to death,” Mariesa Hughes told TODAY. “Her quality of life was suffering, and we really considered her happiness,”
The couple wanted to help Gremlin.
“I started contacting doctors all over the country about glasses for her to help improve her vision in her left eye.” Mariesa said.
In fact, there are glasses for dogs that are called Doggles.
Dr. Petra Lackner, Gremlin’s opthalmologist, suggested contact lenses instead. Contact lenses for animals are not a new idea since this was already introduced 10 years ago by a German company. With this, the couple bought a pair for Gremlin.
Once they received the contact lenses, they immediately tried them on Gremlin.
The result was amazing! Gremlin was able to see her owners. Finally, her dark world was now filled with light and colors. Plus, she can see the joy in her family’s faces.
It was truly a heart-touching moment for the family.
