Grinning puppy flashes BIG smile to everyone who passes by her at the shelter
Though it’s always exciting to go to a shelter to adopt a puppy, it can also be heartbreaking. So many sweet, innocent, furry faces staring back at you from behind their kennels. All want to be adopted and are looking for their forever home, and as much as you want to, you can’t adopt them all.
Of course, being locked up behind a gate, spending most of their time all alone, these animals tend to look pretty sad and forlorn. It’s totally understandable, too. Any of us would look and feel pretty awful if we were just hoping and waiting on someone to come and love us. One puppy named Burreaux, however, took a different approach to shelter life.
The puppy made sure to greet everyone who walked by him with a huge smile.
Burreaux didn’t come to the shelter alone. He and his two litter-mates, Joe and O, were rescued by a volunteer with the Humane Society of North West Louisiana named Sarah Wolton.
Wolton received a call from a fellow animal lover and Director of the HSNWLA, Courtney Wingate, about the three 8-week-old puppies. She had passed by their kennel at animal control and fell in love with all of them.
She couldn’t help but swoon, in particular, for the tiny puppy with an enormous smile.
Of course, Wolton rushed over to pick the puppies up from animal control, who would have had them put down that same day if no one came to rescue them.
Being a huge LSU fan, she named the pups after the school football team’s coach and quarterback. All three pups were healthy and their tests came back negative for Parvo, but Burreaux ended up getting sick while he was at the shelter. After being raced to the animal hospital, though, he made a fast and full recovery.
Once the sweet puppy was back at HSNWLA, Walton began to notice something very unique about Burreaux.
She noticed that every time someone would sweet-talk him in a high-pitched voice and sing his praises, he rewarded them with a flash of his big ol’ goofy grin to show them his pearly whites.
“It’s whenever you’re talking real sweet to him … he gets this smile like he wants something. Like he’s telling you, ‘Come pet me, come love me,’” Walton explined in an interview with The Dodo.
Then the time finally came for each of the adorable pups to be put up for adoption.
Burreaux’s brother Joe found his forever family right away after HSNWLA posted a cute clip of him showing off his impressive fetching skills.
“The entire litter was friendly and sweet and they like to play. Burreaux and his sister are starting to learn fetch, too,” Walton described.
After Joe was adopted, Wingate and Walton got together to brainstorm what skills Burreaux could bedazzle social media viewers with. While Burreaux was no star athlete, he did have a certain sense of charm to him.
Burreaux loves to be “sweet-talked”, and when he is he shows off that irresistible grin of his.
“And we were thinking, ‘Burreaux wants a home so bad that he’s always smiling, trying to cute it up. So we took that video and now it’s going viral,” Walton continued.
The video worked, too!
Within a couple of weeks of posting an adorable video of Burreaux showing off his smile for the camera, his forever family finally came and adopted him!
Thankfully, not too long after Burreaux got adopted, his sister O found her forever home too!
We are so happy for Burreaux and his siblings, who not only escaped the death sentence but even found their happy endings with loving families.
