Your wedding day is without a doubt one of the most overwhelming and emotional days of your life. When the bridal couple recites their vows, tears are bound to start flowing. But one Portuguese groom who stood up with his bride said he had something to say…and it shocked the guests.

Jefferson and Jessica had planned a lavish wedding.

The bride was dressed beautifully from head to toe. The two of them gazed at one another, head over heels in love.

But at much as Jefferson loved his bride, he suddenly stopped the ceremony. He said he had to declare love for someone else.

As it turned out, the bride, Jessica, had a young daughter from a previous relationship.

Her daughter Giovanna was also in attendance.

Many of us have experienced the joys and challenges that come with being a blended family. But it was clear that Jefferson and Giovanna have a wonderful relationship ahead of them.

“Everyone is here for a reason…but there’s one person here that makes this day possible, and my next words are for her,” he said.

As Jefferson turned from his bride, he walked over to Giovanna and knelt before her.

He told her as much as he loved her mother, he loved her, too. And he wanted her to know that in his mind, he wasn’t just vowing to love Jessica forever. He was also making a vow to young Giovanna — to be her father forever.

“I take care of you so I can always protect you and not let anything bad happen to you,” he said. “I can’t really explain my feelings for you. After all, I’m not your biological father. Like we always say, I’m your stepfather. I can’t explain the love I feel for you because I think that love doesn’t have an explanation.”

Introducing a new parent into a child’s life can be challenging.

But Jefferson was committed to doing everything to make a good life for Giovanna. As he spoke to her, she couldn’t hold back her tears of joy. And neither could anyone else, including the bride herself.

“If I could ask God for anything, it would be to have you as my daughter,” he said.

“I would be the proudest father in the world to have such a beautiful, intelligent and educated daughter like you . . . I also give you love, my love, to always take care of you, to always protect you and to not let anything bad happen to you.”

Every wedding is a beautiful occasion of love and commitment.

But Jefferson’s declaration of love went beyond that for his new wife. It was also for his new daughter. That commitment made it a day that no one will ever forget.

When Giovanna was able to speak, she took the microphone and said that she accepted his vows. She was overwhelmed. But it was a wonderful day — not just for the bridal couple, but for the new family.
