Surprised groomer opens doors at midnight to give stray dog the makeover of a lifetime
When dog groomer Kari Falla responded to a call for help on Facebook, she had no idea what she was in for. All she knew was that a dog was in trouble and needed her help. A couple had found a dog on the side of the road that had fur matted so badly that his movement was restricted and he couldn’t see where he was going.
Found on the side of the road
The couple had found the dog wandering on the side of the road. His vision was so bad that he had almost been run over. As the couple approached him, he barely seemed aware of their presence. Of course, the couple couldn’t just leave him there.
Grabbing him they placed him in their car. Unfortunately, they had no idea what to do with him since they couldn’t keep him overnight. That was when they reached out to Facebook for help. Falla saw their post and responded. Rushing to her salon, she had the couple meet her there with the dog.
“As soon as I saw the post I knew the dog needed help IMMEDIATELY,” Falla told The Dodo. “I contacted the finder of the dog and I told them to meet me at my salon at midnight that very night and I would groom him for free.”
The dangers of matted fur
Falla was concerned since extremely matted fur can stop blood flow and cause bruising. She knew it was important to get help for the dog right away and that was why she rushed to her salon that night. As the couple brought the dog in, she was shocked to see just how bad his fur was matted.
“It was seriously the most disturbing situation I’ve ever seen in my life,” she said. “He smelled like death. He could not walk. He could not poop. His whole body was like a mummified cast. He was infested with fleas. He had a very long leash that looked like an outside leash embedded in his skin from the mats,” Falla said.
Falla worked tirelessly to remove the matted fur
Falla worked on removing the dog’s fur until 3 a.m. that morning. Once he was fully shaved, Falla estimated that she had removed over two years of fur. What was underneath the fur was almost as shocking as the fur itself. She also bathed the poor pup and took him to the vet. Between getting his fur removed and being taken to the vet, the dog was named Lucky.
More problems are discovered
Once at the vet Lucky was discovered to have additional problems. He was blind and deaf. He was lucky to have survived his time on the road the night before, and it was a miracle that he had not been hit by a car. He was also lucky to have been found by the caring couple, so the name Lucky was apt in his case.
Finding Lucky a home
After being neutered, getting his shots, and having his teeth cleaned, it was time to find Lucky a home. Having his story posted on Facebook helped match up Lucky with Zachary Blair, who decided almost immediately to adopt Lucky.
How to keep your dog’s fur from getting matted
To keep your dog’s fur from getting matted is to groom them regularly. This includes bathing them and brushing their coat at least once a week. You should also brush them after taking from a walk making sure to remove any leaves, burrs, and other items that can get lodged in their fur.
