German Shepherd mom falls in love at first sight with new puppies
A mother will always be a mother. Whether it’s a human mom or a mama dog, the love for their offspring will always be there.
A short video is going viral on the internet.
In it was a German Shepherd who’d just given birth. Pona, just like any other female dog who’s just given birth, was extra attentive to her puppies.
She was staring at them for a long time.
However, looking at the video, it’s easy to say that she’s not just staring at them. She was actually intrigued.
As the puppies moved around, she was tilting her head.
She was acting as if she was trying to understand what they were trying to tell her. Pona’s ears were upright as if trying to analyze all the kinds of sound coming from the tiny dogs.
Then, she tried to sniff them a bit.
It was an odd gesture. Dogs have an awesome sense of smell. And as a new mom, she was just probably trying to be familiar with her puppies’ scent.
Pona’s video has nearly 400,000 views.
With that many viewers, it’s safe to say that she fascinated tons of people. She even took some of them back to the time when they gave birth to their own kids.
One particular viewer shared:
“I was the exact same way after I had my son….he is 20 now and I still look at him like this….”
Another one said:
“We human moms does the same, stare in fascination & amazement at what was inside us, awestruck, motherhood human or animal is a wonderful experience”
There was also this viewer who had a funny interpretation of Pona’s reaction. She said:
“Mama wake up after giving birth that night before: oh that wasn’t just a dream they are really here.”
Pona is such a gentle mother.
She’s not one of those dogs that display maternal aggression. She was preoccupied with her newborn puppies that she didn’t even realize that she was being filmed.
It’s common for female dogs to become extra protective of their litter.
It comes with all mothers- both humans and animals. However, even though it’s normal, you should still try to learn why it happens and how to deal with it.
The first thing you need to do is get the new mom to have her own quiet place. There, she’ll feel less threatened and stressed. It will also prevent having too many people interfering with her new role. The more people hang around the litter and touch the puppies, the more aggressive the mom may feel.
As days go by, a dog’s maternal aggression fades. You can use this opportunity to show that you aren’t a threat to both the mom and her litter. You can give her treats each time she lets you go near the litter. After that, you can try touching the puppies. If you see no aggressive response, reward the behavior. Repeat these steps several times a day.
