Just like their human counterparts, dogs deserve to live a happy life. And while this is not always the case, certain organizations have taken it upon themselves to make this a reality for as many animals as they can. Towards this end, the people with these organizations work to end the mistreatment of animals no matter where they are found. One such person is Rocky Kanaka.

Dogs Day Out

Kanaka founded #DogsDayOut, which is a series of videos that highlight abused and neglected dogs who have been rescued and need loving homes. As a part of their work, Kanaka likes to take the dogs he helps out for the best day of their lives, including traveling to exciting places, getting to try a variety of new food, and getting love from strangers.

Herschel had spent his life on a chain

A German shepherd named Herschel was one such dog that got this treatment after getting adopted by a new owner in Washington. Before his new life, he had endured five years of neglect on a chain. His condition was so bad that his teeth had become worn down from chewing on the chain around his neck.

Given new hope

Finally rescued, Herschel was brought to the shelter where workers hoped he would be adopted. But, due to his large size as a German shepherd, shelter staff worried he would have problems getting adopted. Of course, that was when Kanaka got involved and decided to feature Herschel on his YouTube show.

Thanks to that exposure, Kanaka was able to find someone willing to adopt Herschel. Now, all Kanaka had to do was get Herschel to his new home in Washington. Kanaka agreed to drive Herschel from Los Angeles to Redding, California, where his new owner would be waiting to take him the rest of the way.

A trip of a lifetime

Kanaka wanted to make sure the car ride was an experience that Herschel wouldn’t soon forget, and soon, they were off. During Herschel’s Dogs Day Out segment he got to have a whole bunch of firsts, such as his first-time seeing snow and his first burrito. Most importantly, kanaka made sure that Herschel got love from everyone that they met along the way.

But it was when they arrived at the beach that Herschel gets the best surprise of the day. His reaction at his first time seeing the ocean was priceless. As soon as Herschel sees the wide expanse of water for the first time he starts barking excitedly and jumping around.

A day at the beach

As Kanaka brings Herschel down to where the ocean meets the sand, he jumps right in. Overcome with joy, the happy dog can’t help but run, bark, and bite at the waves as they come in.

And although he started his life in such horrible conditions, thanks to people like Kanaka, he now has a chance at a new, more love-filled life. Now, Herschel will get to spend the rest of his life getting the life he deserved.
