Talented guitarist plays a masterful rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’
There are many guitar players out there, but some are so talented that they define a generation. Such is Stephanie Jones of Australia. In a video, her rendition of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” is captured masterfully.
Jones’ amazing performance was in honor of her mother’s birthday, and even without words, it is a poignant tribute to someone she loves dearly.
A life filled with music
Growing up with a life filled with music, Jones gravitated toward the acoustic guitar; though, the talented musician plays multiple instruments. Moving to Germany, she chose to study at the prestigious University of Music Franz Liszt under Professor Thomas Müller-Peringunder.
Jones is seeking the highest post-graduate degree, Konzertexamen, offered at the music college. She is also a successful musician, having recorded numerous solo albums. In addition to the Simon and Garfunkel classic, she has also performed other hit songs, including “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.
Winner of numerous awards, Jones plays a spruce top guitar made by guitar maker Paul Sheridan of Perth, Australia. Some of her awards include first place at a variety of competitions, most notably the Hannabach Guitar Competition, Fine Music Network Young “Virtuoso of the Year” Competition, and the Uppsala International Guitar Festival Competition.
A masterful performance
In her rendition of “The Sound of Silence” by duo Simon and Garfunkel, Jones foregoes vocals to focus on the beautiful melodies of the song. Using an arrangement by Lawson and Trueman, Jones’ abilities with her instrument of choice shines through.

The video of Jones’ performance has gotten over 1.2 million views and 41,000 likes. She truly makes the song all her own as she strums in a display of true mastership. Viewers were left enraptured with Jones’ performance, and more than a few were touched by her abilities as a musician.
‘The Sound of Silence’ by Simon and Garfunkel
The song itself is considered a folk song classic that originated when it was first sung by Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s. Named the 18th most-performed song of the 20th century by Broadcast Music Incorporated, the song has also been ranked number 157 on Rolling Stones list of the 500 Greatest Song of All Time.
Covered by many different musicians, Jones’ version of the song is unique in that it touches the listener without ever having to use the song’s iconic vocal track. It is just one example of Jones’ ability to play and exhibit the emotion of a song through her instrument alone.
