Before starting with the tutorial, Collier pointed out a very important part of home building.

“Before you paint, it’s important to get your walls as smooth as you can,” he said.

Couldn’t agree more with that, you wouldn’t want bumps and cracks on your walls, would you?

How to deal with wall cracks? Here’s how.

This video particularly deals with a wall crack above a door.

Step 1: Mask off the woodwork above the door itself. To do this, just simply grab a masking tape and put a decent amount on it.

This will avoid the woodwork from getting any kind of unwanted dirt during the entire process.

Step 2: In this step, Collier said you could use a screwdriver, a utility knife, and even an old-fashioned church key, to open up the crack.

Step 3: Clean the crack and remove the dust from the area. To do this, you could use a damp cloth, a brush, or a vacuum cleaner.

Step 4: Once the area of the crack is clean, apply a self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape.

According to him, the mesh tape will reinforce the joint and help prevent cracks in the future.

Step 5: Next is applying a thin coat of drywall joint compound to fill in the crack and the cavities in the tape.

Once the first coat dries off, remove any bumps by scraping the surface and then apply the second coat. Do the same before applying the third coating.

Step 6: If the final coat is already dry, it’s time to smoothen it by scraping and using sandpaper.

If the area is all smooth, apply primer all over the coated area. Wait for the primer to dry off before applying the main wall paint.
