Ken Collier showed off his simple solution in a video with an equally simple title: “Fixing Wall Cracks.”

Collier is an editor of The Family Handyman Magazine, so he definitely knows his stuff!

Step one is to protect any nearby woodwork around the crack, such as doors or window sills, with masking tape.

The next step is to get a screwdriver, a utility knife or even a key to open up the crack a little more.

You need to scrape away until you get down to sound drywall on either side of the crack.

Then clean out all debris from the crack with a damp cloth or a brush or a vacuum.

Then apply self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape to the crack. This stops future cracks.

After that, scrape a thin layer of drywall joint compound over the tape. Feather the compound out on both sides. Wait for this layer to dry.

Once it’s dry, scrape off any bumps from the first layer and add a second layer of the compound. Let this second layer dry.

When this second layer is dry, smooth out the compound and apply a third layer of it over the crack. Feather it until you’re sure that the crack is undetectable.

Once the third layer is dry, scrape it, sand it and prime it. If the crack is going into the ceiling, a doorframe or a window sill, then be sure to sand down the edges/corners.

Then dust off any loose bits of the compound. Apply a thorough layer of primer to the affected bit of wall.

(This bit is very important. If you apply paint over the compound without putting primer on first, it will have a noticeably different gloss.)

Once the primer is dry, paint over the fixed up bit of wall.

Collier’s guide to fixing a wall crack has helped many, many people online. The video has over 2.9 million views on YouTube. It also has over 5,000 likes and only 376 dislikes. There are hundreds of appreciative comments. People have been saying things like this:
