Tough and burly bikers stand in court with children facing their abusers to help them feel safe
The court process is scary for anyone to go through, let alone young children. In many situations, kids must stand trial and face their abusers in court to incriminate them. While many of us feel scared with a parking ticket, these kids face their worst nightmares. That’s where BACA comes in!
BACA stands for Bikers Against Child Abuse and they pack a punch when it comes to defending those who need it. BACA is an international organization that enables kids to confront their abusers in court. Through their powerful presence and attitude, they give kids the confidence and courage necessary to speak honestly. If I had a biker gang standing next to me in court, I would feel confident too!
BACA gives kids the confidence to stand up to their abusers.
BACA was founded in Provo, Utah by a rough and tumble man, John Paul Lilly, or “Chief” for short. Founding the organization over 25 years ago, BACA has opened chapters in almost all 50 states, and many more in countries around the world!
Their Creed.
“I won’t give up, shut up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, and showed up for all wounded children.” [BACA]
As seen in this excerpt from their creed, these bikers take what they do very seriously! Swearing in as a new member means spending one’s life dedicated to love and protection. This is part of what makes BACA so successful. Every member understands the gravity and purpose for which they “ride” and live. If there is one group that I would want on my side as a kid, a Biker gang might be number one!
The BACA Mission
When “Chief” started the organization, his goal was to connect bikers with abused children to help them go through the justice system. One of the things that make it so intimate is that many of the bikers had experienced abuse as children, adding passion and mission to what they do. Knowing what it takes to go through the system, they decided that these kids needed some backup.
How it works
One of the primary modes of operation for BACA is in the courtroom. If one of “their kids” is going to court, they will send a group of bikers to support and stand with the child, all while working through the justice system in a reputable way. Having a group of bikers roll up and form a squad in the courtroom around a kid is a sure way to put some fear into the hearts of the perpetrator!
Kid becomes one of the gang
One of the coolest touches that BACA does is its initiation for the kids they work with. When they show up to the house of the child for the first time, they bring a patch and vest with the logo on it. The kid gets to put on the vest and patch and know that he is a part of a group that cares about him.
When the kids know that they have some awesome “big brothers” looking out for them, they gain a ton of confidence! Even more than that, the kids get to go on a motorcycle ride afterward!
The results are obvious.
With BACA, kids are decidedly different in the courtroom and even school! One member said:
“When we get involved, these kids gain self-confidence. They beam, do better in school, and they’re not afraid anymore. And that’s what we do, we give them their lives back.”
Whether or not the stories about other biker gangs are true, BACA surely shows how powerful it is to have people who believe in you.
