It’s sad to think that there are people who can easily abandon a home pet without any hesitation. While we always say dogs are man’s best friend, sadly, some people can’t be the same to them.

With the countless abandoned dogs all over the world, animal shelters get congested. Thankfully, there are quite a bunch of kind people who are ready to step up to foster these poor animals and eventually find their forever homes.

Not just another day at the office.

Cara Achterberg was on their last stop on their two-week tour of southern shelters. They were on their way to Scott County Animal Shelter to pick up six dogs. She also learned about a pregnant dog being surrendered by its precious owner to the said shelter.

Seeing dogs left behind by their owners wasn’t new to her, she’d seen tons of them. However, the thought of the pregnant dog seemed to have been tattooed in her mind. She initially planned on taking the preggy doggo with her but she was hesitant about the shelter letting her do it, not unless the dog had the things needed to cross a state line into Pennsylvania – rabies vaccine and a health certificate.

Driving around the mountainous part of Virginia, Cara hoped to stumble upon an open vet clinic.

It was also Labor Day at that time so hoping to see one is almost close to being impossible. The thought of adopting the dog even crossed her mind, why not? Nobody would stop her from her plan of bringing joy to the abandoned dog.

One morning over breakfast, she told her husband, Nick, “I’m taking that dog.” It almost looked like her husband already saw the question coming because he just nodded and said, “I figured.”

Cara was definitely on a mission to save the pregnant dog and she’s close to accomplishing it.

The truth behind animal shelters.

Some animal shelters are well-equipped and are truly conducive for dogs to live at. Sadly, some shelters aren’t as blessed when it comes to equipment and supplies. It’s the sad truth about animal shelters nowadays, perhaps it’s because of their lack of funds or sponsors to keep them going.

Looking at where the soon-to-be momma dog was about to deliver, Cara had already decided! She’s really determined to bring the doggo home, she’s not letting her deliver her puppies on a cold concrete floor. Add it up to the deafening noise of the barks from the rest of the dogs in the shelter, there’s no way the pups are going to survive in there.

Getting into action.

Cara then started to get in touch with the shelter’s coordinator, Barb. The next step was to take Dixie (they wanted to name her Dixieland) to a vet clinic in Purcellville, Virginia, which was about 6 hours away.

Soon, they got the green light and brought Dixie with them along with the other dogs. It was indeed a plan rolled out well for Cara because she’s finally taking the expecting momma dog somewhere safer for her and her pups.

But before they even get home, they found out something at the vet’s clinic – Dixie had one of her legs fractured. They didn’t notice it since the dog hadn’t lifted any of her legs at the shelter. Luckily, it wasn’t something to be worried about.

Puppies incoming!

Pretty soon, after a close watch on Dixie and preparing whatever was needed on her delivery, finally – it’s about time! The expecting momma dog eventually gave birth to a litter of adorable pups, eight to be specific – all healthy!

All of Dixie’s pups were adopted by eight happy and excited families! The momma dog spent another month with Cara to recover, she was soon spayed and adopted too.

Looks like a job well done for Cara for bringing Dixie and her pups to their new forever homes and loving families.
