Superman actor opens up about how his dog Kal saved his mental health many times

British actor Henry Cavill, Superman and Geralt of Rivia himself, loves his dog as much as we love ours. Cavill told the world about his American Akita, Kal, and how the dog changed his life.

The on screen superhero needed saving himself, and he says it’s Kal who has given him the support he needed during tough times in his life.

His post in 2020 described the Akita as “part dog, part bear, part pig and all soul,” and said he is an “absolute gem.”

“I’ve had him since he was 10 weeks old and we have been through thick and thin together,” Cavill wrote. “We actually spend so much time together, I’m not sure who imitates who anymore!”

Cavill appeared on the British morning talk show “Lorraine” bringing Kal along with him for the interview. His appearance on the show was aimed to promote the second season of “The Witcher”.

The actor chatted with host Lorraine Kelly, answering her questions while talking about how much his dog meant to him especially when it came to battling mental health over the years.

“He has saved my emotional and psychological bacon plenty of times. We have an incredibly close bond,” Cavill said. “He senses it when I’ve got my own stuff on, he’ll be close — he’s almost always close, but he’ll be closer.”

Cavill also told the world that he does have his Superman suit in his closet. He is “ready and waiting for the phone call” should anyone want him to reprise the role.

He loves Kal so much that the dog is often by his side wherever he goes. Including work.

In an interview with People, he said, “He was there the entire time, he spent most of his time in the trailer rather than on set. Because when he can see me, but he can’t get to me, he tends to start making a lot of noise.”

Kal gets to be on set of “The Witcher” too.

“We didn’t want him running in halfway through a scene or a sword fight especially, because he would be taking people down. But he was always there.”

Kal has been the actor’s savior, something all responsible dog owners know all too well.

“He is a true companion and in those moments where I just need another being around but not necessarily to be putting lots of effort in that person,” Cavill told On Demand Entertainment.

Kal is more than a pet to Cavill. He considers the dog as part of the family, showering Kal with all his affection.

“He’s fantastic. To me, he’s very much — he’s a dog but he’s a companion. He’s a person as well.”
