If there’s one good thing about being in self-isolation, it’s encouraging us all to put our talents to use. Some of us have been 3D printing various healthcare devices, while others have got sewing to create masks to protect against COVID-19.

It’s always nice to see how people are doing their bit to contribute to Coronavirus support right now, especially when the elderly – who, out of all of us, deserve to put their feet back and relax – get involved.

The latest person to impress us with their determination to make a change is 89-year-old Teresa Provo, also known as Grandma Terry. A video has emerged of her busily working a way at her sewing desk in her home, where she lives alone, in Chicago, Illinois.

Grandma Terry has relied on her sewing machine to help her pass the long hours in quarantine – and she hasn’t just been using it to make personal items!

Rewind back to a couple of months ago, when lockdown was first announced. Grandma Terry, being the selfless lady that she is, immediately wondered how she could help those in need, from her family, to strangers around the world.

She wasn’t sure what she could do to begin with, but then she saw her sewing machine, and an idea began to form.

It wasn’t long before Grandma Terry was on the hunt for material. She found as much of it as she could, then sat down at her sewing desk and began to create masks.

Once she hit 50 masks, it was time to sell them to the masses! Grandma Terry mailed them to anyone who wanted them, sending them from one end of the States to the other. People in California, Florida, Chicago, Wisconsin and Minnesota were wearing – and loving – Grandma Terry’s creations.

She even personalized the masks to give them a homemade touch. She added people’s favorite sports teams and sent each mask off with a handwritten note. Now this is a lady who knows how to satisfy her customers!

What makes Grandma Terry’s story even better is that she creates all of her masks while listening to one of the coolest playlists of all time – a compilation of songs by the Beatles.

Speaking to Good News Network about the video of Grandma Terry working away to “Help!”, her granddaughter, Amy Szabo, said:

“She just likes the Beatles, cause who doesn’t!”

Grandma Terry is a member of her town’s “Red Hat Club”, a group of elderly people who like to meet up (when self-isolation isn’t happening) and get involved in events and activities. Of course, when they heard about what Grandma Terry was keeping busy with, they had to get involved.

Now the group has made more than 600 masks in total. Impressive stuff! Some of these have been distributed to Grandma Terry’s peers at her nursing home, while others have travelled the country.

Despite her mask-making success, and all the subsequent media attention, Grandma Terry still remains humble. Speaking about her latest helpful hobby, she said:

“It took us two weeks, but we get ‘em done. I’m still working on some.”
