Man turns into hero for running after and catching thief who snatched an elderly woman’s purse

Not all heroes wear capes and possess superpowers.

On December 5, 2021, an elderly woman in her late 80s, Pat Goins, was peacefully shopping at Kroger in Lemon Township. Then out of nowhere, a man snatched away her purse that’s strapped to her shopping cart.

Thankfully, Deshawn Pressley, together with his daughter, was just in a different aisle when he heard Goins screaming for help.

“I heard her screaming and yelling … it was the yell that I need help,” Pressley said while trying to recall what happened. “And I just turned around and did what I needed to do as a citizen.”

In fact, he just had a friendly chat with Goins before he heard the elderly woman screaming, “My purse!”

Pressley wasted no time and immediately jumped into action.

Other shoppers also tried to run after the thief, but Pressley was just too fast on his feet. He chased the man and caught him in the parking lot where he was able to successfully apprehend the perpetrator.

The heart-stopping scene was caught by a security camera where Pressley was seen giving the thief what he deserves before making a citizen’s arrest.

“He was running and looking back, running and looking back, and I was like ‘yeah, I’m on you’re a–,” said Pressley.

Thankfully, Goins wasn’t hurt during the incident. It appeared the man was only interested in stealing whatever was inside her purse.

On the other hand, Pressley only had some minor scratches on his arms after pinning down the culprit on the ground before the authorities arrived. Despite his injuries, the Good Samaritan was after all glad about what happened and said it was all worth it.

Butler County Sheriff Deputy James Davenport, the officer who responded to the scene said Presley was undoubtedly brave for what he did. He could’ve been seriously hurt if it so happened that the thief was armed with a deadly weapon.

The suspect was later on charged with robbery and theft with a $55,000 cash bond.

Naturally kind.

Turns out, helping others and doing the right thing is something Pressley has been doing since he was little. During his younger years, he used to shovel snow off for elderly women without charging them any fee.

He’d often tell them he didn’t want any money and that he just wanted to do it because he cared.

According to Pressley, he decided to run after the thief because it’s how he was raised by his grandmother who took care of him since he was young. His mother passed away early and his grandmother was the one who taught him to be kind all the time.

“I’m glad that I helped her because she is a wonderful, lovely lady and I just love helping people, especially older women,” Pressley said. “They need love, they need security just like every other woman, no matter the age.”

On December 17, Pressley was called upon by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office where he was awarded a Citizen’s Award by the Sheriff.

“I’m glad that he received this honor because he’s my hero,” Goins said about Pressley’s Citizen’s Award.

Pressley and Goin met again after the incident and they promised to keep in touch, in fact, they planned to go on a dinner date after that awarding ceremony.

During these trying times, we need more people like Pressley who would unhesitatingly do whatever just to be able to help someone in need.
