Scarlett the mother cat was fully aware of how dangerous it was to go back inside the building. But she was determined to put her kittens before herself.

The cat and her five kittens were all strays. They had been living in an abandoned building in Brooklyn, New York. Then, suddenly, a fire broke out in the building.

At first, the cat panicked. She of course wanted to escape from the fire as soon as possible. But she also wanted to ensure that her kittens were safe. The babies were too frail to escape on their own.

So she picked one of the kittens up in her mouth and ran through the blaze. When she reached the outdoors, she carefully dropped the kitten onto the ground.

Then, without hesitating, the mother ran back into the fire. She made her way back to the four remaining kittens and once more picked one up with her mouth.

Once again, she ran through the fire and the smoke, causing herself great personal injury this time around.

Even though the fire continued to rage, Scarlett ran back inside, desperate to retrieve another kitten.

And she didn’t stop until all five kittens were out of the building.

By the time the last kitten was safe, Scarlett was in a bad way. There were burns all over her body. Her eyes had blistered so much that she couldn’t see.

So she counted the kittens with her nose, ensuring that they were all safe. Then she collapsed onto the ground

Luckily, firefighters extinguished the blaze and spotted the cats. Scarlett was still unconscious.

Soon, they took Scarlett and the kittens to a vet.

Over the next three months, the vet treated Scarlett and her kittens with the utmost care. Scarlett would always have terrible scars from the burns on her body. Sadly, one of the kittens contracted a virus and died. But the other four kittens all made full recoveries. The mother had done her job well.

Eventually, the vet was able to find forever homes for Scarlett and each of the kittens.

They all thrived in their respective homes. The kittens could not remember the fire, and for Scarlett, it soon became a very distant memory.

Scarlett was adopted by a woman named Karen Wellen.

She wrote to the vet explaining that she had received an injury in a car accident, and the event had made her want to take care of special needs animals.

This incident took place in 1996. Scarlett recovered well enough to live until the year 2008. It’s great to know that she had a long and full life after the fire.

When Scarlett died, Wellen said the following: “She was the most precious and loving cat in our household. It was all about Scarlett.”

Scarlett also inspired many people. In fact, the North Shore Animal League even created an award for Animal Heroism in honor of Scarlett.

She shows just how far a mother will go for her babies.
