High school alters girls’ yearbook pictures and parents are outraged

High School is a time of innocent youth.

For many teens, it is a time of firsts, including many rites of passage. One of these is the high school yearbook. So, when one high school took it upon themselves to make changes to the high school yearbook, without permission, students and parents were angry.

A shocking discovery

The incident took place at Bartram High School in Jacksonville, Florida. It all started when the students received their yearbooks. Excited, they were shocked to find that some of the photos inside had been altered.

Some selective editing was performed

The photos that were altered were all of young women, 80 in all, whose clothing was changed to cover up what someone associated with the school considered as showing too much skin.

Understandably, most of the girls were shocked and mortified at the changes.

A misogynist move on the school’s part

To make it even worse was the fact that none of the photos of the boys were altered. There were some photos of boys that showed them in speedo swimsuits, but those hadn’t been changed to cover up anything. This was an obvious example of misogyny in action.

Some of the alterations were over the top

Even photos that showed little to anything at all were changed. In one case, the young lady was wearing a modest top showing very little cleavage. Now, why this would be changed is beyond reason, but change it they did, often to the embarrassment of the young woman involved.

No one was informed of the impending alterations

As one of the women, Riley O’Keefe gave her thoughts on the alterations, “I got very upset and I was very uncomfortable that that’s how they were looking at our photos.”

Even the parents of the girls impacted by the changes were taken aback. The school had definitely not advised any of them that the changes were going to be made. Only after the yearbook came out were they told of the “modesty editing” that had been performed on the photos.

The school defends itself

After the incident sparked controversy, the school responded with a statement:

“All images in ads and all individual student pictures must be consistent with the St. John’s County School District Student Code of Conduct or may be digitally adjusted.”

Sending a mixed message

The clincher was this, some of the girls, including Riley, had worn the same outfits to school before and had never been told that they violated the school’s dress code. Riley had even selected the outfit because she considered it a safe choice to wear for picture day. Her mom was also rightfully upset.

“Immediately, my blood started to boil. They felt like they’d done something wrong. It felt like their bodies were being shamed and they were embarrassed,” she said in a video.

Some very shoddy editing

Some of the edits were not even that good. One mom complained that the photo of her daughter had been edited so badly that it looked like she had a square block on her chest.

And while many thought that the school had gone too far, the only solution offered by the school was a full refund to the complaining families.
