High school students 'plotted' for months to make classmates with Down syndrome prom king & queen
High school students spend their days in classes, hanging out, playing sports, and attending parties their parents don’t always know or approve of.
Except one special night that everyone, including parents, look forward to.
Prom night is the one time freckled kids and muscled up jocks get to dress up with the hopes of talking to that cute cheerleader or the girl in the library.
Then there’s the coronation of the king and queen.
Jefferson Forest High School in Virginia had this year’s graduating class preparing for the big night, but what sets this school apart from others is that they chose to promote inclusivity.
The last few weeks leading up to prom night had the seniors planning an awesome surprise for their schoolmates Zane Wales and Anna Anderson, Zane’s long-time girlfriend.
Both Zane and Anna were born with Down syndrome.
Teachers at Jefferson Forest kept hearing talks in February about nominating Zane. Students wanted him to be prom royalty king. Which meant Anna just had to be the queen.
“Probably in February or March, I had a few students like, ‘You know what? This year, Zane Wales for prom king — let’s do it!’” said teacher Heather Hevener. “So, they started the campaign on their own, and then, when we asked for nominations, Zane’s name came through.”
“A few students were saying, ‘Zane Wales for prom king,’ and Zane and Anna have been together since middle school, so wherever Zane is, Anna’s there too, so it’s fitting for both of them to be prom king and queen,” added special education teacher Taylor Perkins.
She works with the couple every day.
Perkins described the couple as “fun-loving, free-spirited people.”
Prom night came. Zane and Anna both looked amazing but they had no idea they were nominated. Then they heard their names called.
The students cheered the beautiful couple upon declaration that they were prom king and queen. Anna and Zane received their crowns and sashes while posing for photos.
Local businesses gave their support to make the couple’s night unforgettable.
Emerald Limousine lent them a limo while Celebration Bridal donated Anna’s dress and Zane’s tuxedo. They were literally the stars of the evening.
Teacher Heather says the people behind all the support walk the same halls so they just wanted to make sure that the couple felt part of it all.
Anna and Zane were super happy to have been given the honor as king and queen. They ruled that night!
Students would even come up to the prom king and prom queen, asking for their autographs. The teachers hope other schools follow their example.
Anna’s favorite part of the night was the dance. Zane loved his coronation.
Thanks to the selfless efforts of high school students, this beautifully inclusive moment will forever remain in Anna and Zane’s minds. It was an amazing evening for everyone involved.
