“Hillbilly” women take over Irish street with country flash mob, earning more than 10M views

Since it was posted in 2014, a video of an unlikely Irish flashmob has already been viewed well over 10 million times.

What can we say? People like a good flashmob!

Prior to the action, it was like any other cloudy day on Quay Street in Galway City as shopping milled around, some with kids in tow.

But singer Lisa McHugh had other ideas.

The country and Irish singer was actually born in Scotland to Irish parents and didn’t move to Ireland until June 2010 when she put together her band and started touring. Now, she’s released a total of 7 albums and 13 singles.

But in 2014, she wanted to film a video for her song “Hillbilly Girl” and decided to enlist the help of some friends.

After the rain had come and gone that day, McHugh walked out onto the pavement in the middle of the pedestrian way, surrounded by people going about their business.

But as her song (presumably) starts playing in the street, she breaks out into a dance. And a lone woman dancing in the street is enough to get a few looks and smiles.

Luckily, she’s pretty quickly joined by some friends of all ages who suspiciously happen to know all the same choreography to the song.

Everyone is dressed in their everyday clothing except for McHugh who has her cowboy boots and fringe jacket on to prove she’s a “Hillbilly Girl.”

While more and more people stop to watch it looks like it might be a pretty small “mob” of dancers.

But it doesn’t take long for another group of young women sitting nearby to perk up and join in.

Now we’re in business.

Pedestrians clear the street for the impromptu dance troupe as they line dance to McHugh’s song.

It’s pretty country, but when the fiddle solo breaks out we start to see some of Galway’s residents start bopping their heads and they record the scene on their phones.

And here’s where we can’t tell if it’s Irish or country music – but the onlookers don’t seem to care!

About two dozen women in total make up the backup dancers.

And like any good flashmob, as soon as it’s over everyone walks away and things go back to normal. The women clear out in under a minute and already the street is filled back up with pedestrians going about their shopping again.

When the video was posted to the Keltic Country TV Facebook page, commenters had great things to say about the video:

“If you were feeling down before watching this?… surely it must lift you up?….. or your a very cold fish indeed!,” said one.

Many people watching found McHugh’s joy infectious and wished they could get up and dance with her (although some people seem to think the Irish just naturally know the moves to this dance and that it was truly spontaneous for the rest of the dancers – let’s not ruin it for them).

And would it even be online if there weren’t a few creepy comments about women?

“Just wonderful, a terrific song well sung, and all the lovely girls danced very well, (they are all very fit and agile),” mentioned one man, inexplicably.
