Hip-hop flash mob takes English town off-guard and draws a massive crowd

Residents and visitors to the hazy, rainswept city of Nottingham were surprised with an unexpected flash mob recently. The hip-hop choreographed dance routine took pedestrians by surprise on September 26th of this year when a small group of youths decided to use the art of dance to get across a very important message.

This is one flash mob with a purpose; to draw attention to how we, as everyday people, are addressing climate change.

A person can roam the city streets all day without coming across anything that could be deemed very “out of the ordinary”. That simply wasn’t the case for Nottingham’s city passersby a few months ago. So, when you suddenly notice a small flash mob forming, you stop to check it out.

That’s what the small dance group was aiming for when they decided to cut loose in the middle of town.

It all starts with a simply dressed red-headed girl standing alone in the square.

It was a rainy, hazy day and people were all about her, bustling from one shop to another as they ticked their way through the day’s agenda. The girl is standing next to a large speaker with her arms folded. Then, out of nowhere, a voice that we’re assuming is hers begins playing over the speaker, saying:

We are right now, in the beginning of a climate and ecological crisis…and we need to call it what it is. An emergency.”

Immediately following the end of her sentence, you can hear hip-hop music begin to play and gradually get louder and louder.

The girl starts bobbing her head in tune to the music. That’s when a young man enters the screen from the right, seemingly emerging from the bustling crowd out of nowhere. He’s also bobbing his head in unison with the girl. At first, it looks as though he’s going to walk up to her and start a conversation, and he does…just not how you’d think.

The two suddenly burst into a myriad of different hip-hop dance moves, including the robot, among others.

The two of them are dancing to the changing beats in perfect unison. Anyone passing by at this point might just assume they’re a young couple or close friends having a good time dancing in the square. Even so, the pair are so good at their moves that quite a few people stop what they’re doing to check out the flash dance before them.

Then, all of a sudden, three more people burst into the dance from the busy crowd.

Now a group of five, there’s no question that Nottingham’s just been hit by a flash mob.

It’s obvious by the way their moves are so perfectly timed that they’ve put a lot of time and effort into crafting this particular flash mob experience. And why wouldn’t they? They’re trying to draw attention to themselves as a platform for a much greater social issue, after all, and they’re doing it fabulously.

They move together in perfect synchronicity as they form a successional wave with their bodies while they push the music forward. The way the dance continues is the perfect picture of how people can do amazing things when they act together.

As the flash mob continues to wow the city crowd with their synchronized moves, an even larger crowd begins to draw near to them.

If they came to get people’s attention, there is no question that they’re succeeding. While the mashup of songs plays on, people start pulling out their cell phones to record the memorable flash mob moment.

The dance was organized by Club Mob, who later uploaded a full-length video of their epic dance to Youtube. The video was uploaded a couple of months ago and has since received tens of thousands of views.

At the close of the dance, the woman’s voice comes back on and says:

“Now we all have a choice… We can create tranformational action that will safeguard the living conditions for future generations. Or we can continue with our business as usual, and fail. That is up to you and me. If you look through history, all the big changes in society have been started by people at the grass-roots level. People like you and me…”
