Puppy hit by car spends 12 hours lying in ditch hoping that someone would save her

While cars and trucks can definitely make life a whole lot easier, there’s no denying that the road can be a very dangerous place sometimes, for humans and animals alike. It’s estimated that millions of animals die a horrible death because they got run over by a truck, and it’s likely that this amount is even an underestimation. Most of the time, drivers won’t even go outside and check up on the injured animal, which often results in them being in a horribly long period of anguish and pain.

This homeless puppy was one of those poor animals, who got run over by a car and couldn’t walk anymore after the accident.

It all happened during a snowy day in Alberta, Canada, and this puppy was known to roam the streets for a while. Tragically, the four-footer managed to get on the highway, and he never saw the speeding car coming. The driver obviously must’ve noticed the impact, but didn’t even bother to stop and check if the animal needed any help. The dog was severely hurt, and her pelvis was almost crushed, making it basically impossible to walk or move.

The puppy was completely helpless and paralyzed, left to die in the cold snow.

After almost half a day, a couple of teens in the area managed to spot something weird in the snow – there was a molten spot, which was caused by the puppy’s body heat. When they got closer, they saw this helpless four-footer and immediately got in touch with the local animal rescue services. Right away, the AB Task Force coordinated with the Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society to send over a team and check it out.

The rescuers at the scene realized that her chances of survival were slim, but rushed her towards the animal hospital.

“She spent over 12 hours lying there alone and cold before rescuers found and rushed her to SAVEvet,” the rescue organization posted on their Instagram.

The poor little four-footer was rescued just in time, and miraculously, doctors managed to get her out of a critical condition and were able to treat her pelvis injury quite well. Of course, she still had a long road of recovery ahead of her, but her life wasn’t in danger anymore and she was finally a little bit comfortable again.

Some of the rescuers came up with a name for the stray puppy: Nutmeg.

It’s a reference to her fur, which is rather orange-colored.

Nutmeg had to stay in a comfortable recovery crate for the better part of two months, but the rescuers definitely made sure that she had all the attention and affection she needed. Her belly was well-fed and her loveable and affectionate personality really started showing too. That happy face and wagging tail meant the world to the rescuers!

She was already able to move after six weeks, and the AARCS put her up for adoption, hoping to find her a forever home.

After a little while, the animal organization posted a wonderful update: Nutmeg found a warm and loving family!

If it weren’t for these alert teenagers or the amazing rescuers for the AARCS, Nutmeg wouldn’t stand a chance. But right now, she’s got her whole happy life ahead of her.

We have a GREAT PUPDATE on Nutmeg the 'Ditch Puppy' for #NationalPuppyDay ❤ Look at her now!10 weeks ago a young puppy was hit by a car and spent over 12 hours alone in a snowy ditch paralyzed with a fractured pelvis. This sweet young girl was on crate rest for six weeks while her fractures healed and she was able to walk again. Nutmeg's life would have surely been lost if it were not for two teenage boys from Siksika Nation who passed by her on the way to go skateboarding. They realized she was unable to move and they called for help.Working together with the Alberta Spay Neuter Task Force they scoured the ditch to find Nutmeg again, but she had sunk deeper into the ditch under the snow and blended in with the long grass. Once they finally spotted her they were able to safely place her in the vehicle and transport her to the emergency vet clinic where she was treated. “No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted.” — AesopWe are so pleased to share with you all that Nutmeg has found her very own forever home!
