World, meet Hokule’a (Hoku for short), the surfing cat!

His parents, Alessia and Pat, first met him when they went to the Hawaiian Humane Society to look for a kitty. After looking around for a while, they bumped into Hoku’s sweet face and they absolutely fell in love with him.

So, they took him home and they realized he was very shy.

“[He was] very shy. [At first,] he was hiding under the bed and under the sheets of the bed,” Alessia told The Dodo.

But then, little by little, he started to warm up to them, to the point that he always wanted to be close to them, while he hated to be left alone. He even followed them in the shower- without minding the occasional splash of water- and in the garden and poolside. Actually, he even followed them in the pool, too!

That’s when the couple realized that not only wasn’t the kitty afraid of the water, but it also enjoyed it!

“So we thought to take him to the ocean, on our surfboard. It turned out, he has no fear of water. Yes, we were at first very surprised, but we did some research and found out that there are many cats who are water-friendly,” Alessia and Pat told The Fluffy Kitty.

Since Hoku was already 8 months old when they adopted him, they didn’t get the chance to train him, but they found it easy to make him comfortable with the ocean and the surfing board.

At first, Pat made a little “boogie bed” for him, so he could sit comfortably on the surfboard, until he didn’t need it anymore. When he was confident enough, he started walking on the surfboard and even diving off it. If Alessia was around, he would swim towards her and then back to the surfboard.

The most challenging part of this adventure was finding the ideal spot where the three of them could surf in peace.

“We avoid places with people and dogs since Hoku is scared by both, which itโ€™s not easy here in Hawaii where beaches are very crowded,” they explain.

So, for them, the dream adventure would be, as they say, a deserted beach with small waves where Hoku can enjoy the ocean. No people or dogs would make him really happy.

So, what is a day with them at the beach like?

The three of them jump in the ocean, surfing and swimming for about an hour. Then, Hoku starts getting tired, and that’s when his parents give him a nice freshwater shower so that he doesn’t groom himself in salty water. They pat him dry and they’re ready to go home!

We’re glad the couple and the kitty found one another and share the same interests and love of water! We are sure they have plenty of adventures awaiting them in the future!
