Make holes in potatoes for delicious side dish that’s easier and better than French fries

French fries – the vanilla of foods. No matter where you go, you can get a side of fries, right? I mean, fries are so ubiquitous that it’s nearly impossible to find a place that doesn’t serve fries. Even more, we will judge a restaurant by their ability to cook fries – usually pretty harshly!

Part of that salty goodness comes from the potato.

Potatoes are easy to grow and seem to grow almost anywhere! On top of them being such a calorie-dense food, it makes sense that potatoes are kind of like the “rice of the west”, with over 4,000 varieties out there!

Fries are just one of the ways that we eat potatoes.

Known as “Bread Crumb Potatoes”, this dish came to us from Webspoon World. The ingredients are really easy, too:

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 40 grams of bread crumbs (5 tbsp.)
  • 5 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. of thyme
  • 1 tsp. of salt
  • 1/4 tsp. of black pepper
  • 50 ml of olive oil

Once you have them, get to cooking!

The first thing you need to do is prepare your bread crumbs. Either make your own or use storebought (nobody will judge you).

Put the bread crumbs into a bowl and mix them with the garlic, thyme, salt, pepper, and oil. The oil will help everything to come together nicely.

Now, let’s prep the potatoes. Cut the potatoes into six slices each and add them to the mixing bowl to coat. Using either your hands, a plate on top, or a lid, shake and mix until all the potatoes are coated in the mixture!

Put them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and pop that into the oven for about forty minutes at 180 C (356 F).

Now, you can eat those delicious treats with ketchup or mayo!

Let’s cover one more!

Here are the ingredients for the one with the holes in it:

  • 50 ml of vegetable oil

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

Let’s get to cooking!

Using a melon ball cutter (or something similar), take round chunks out of the potato, maybe 4-6 holes per potato. Soak the balls and cored potatoes in water while we do the rest.

Add the oil, garlic, Herbs de Provence, turmeric, salt, and pepper to a bowl. Mix it around and add in the balled potatoes and whole potatoes! Toss them with a lid (or your hands) and then pour them onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. We recommend you split up the different potatoes so you can bake them each appropriately.

Bake the little balls for 25 minutes at 180 C or 350 F. The bigger ones need to be in at the same temperature for around 40 minutes. When they are done, you have a perfect snack that looks as unique as they are!
