No one helps woman with flat tire – then a homeless man becomes her saving grace
There are moments in our lives that often remind us that there are good people in the world. Some moments remind us of our prejudices and insecurities. When both of those things happen at the same time, it can make for a story that resonates through a community.
Single mother is helped by homeless man after she blew a tire.
Shuree found herself in a situation that we have all found ourselves in before – on the side of the road with a blown tire.
Normally this isn’t too big of an issue, albeit an inconvenient one. The problem, however, was that Shuree is a single mother and, much like my wife, wasn’t certain on the details of how to change her tire. This put her in a situation where she didn’t feel super comfortable moving forward with the small fix.
Thankfully, she had someone to help her.
A homeless man named Chuck came to the rescue.
Chuck noticed that Shuree was struggling and stepped in to help her. After finishing up with the repairs, they both went their separate ways, unknowingly being caught on film!
Anna owned a restaurant right next to where Check stepped in to help Shuree. Catching the entire event on camera, she posted it to remind everyone of some good in the world. Anna knew Chuck and that he, like everyone else in this world, has a story of his own.
We often separate ourselves from those in need.
It can be easy to distance ourselves from those that we find difficulty associating with. For many homeless, this is the case. When we begin to view people AS their circumstance instead of A RESULT of their circumstance, we can de-humanize them.
Does this mean that every time we see a seemingly homeless person that we should empty our wallets? Of course not. Regardless of how much e give or donate, the important factor is allowing ourselves to be reminded of someone’s humanity.
The comfort of easy charity.
Matthew Barnett is a non-profit leader based out of Los Angeles, running the well-known charity, the Los Angeles Dream Center. Recently, he voiced his frustration with many people canceling their volunteer trips to help the homeless because of the amount of homeless that are now present. Essentially, people were ok with helping… as long as it didn’t cost them too much.
With the popularity of YouTube and social media, it is easy to have our faith in humanity, and in people, restored!
We get to see so many incredible stories of people who make projects out of giving to those in need and provided ways for them to recover and get back on their feet. There are plenty of stories of YouTubers following the homeless around after giving them large sums of money, only to see the homeless person buy food for their friends.
When we continue to see people as people, we get to make the world a better place!
Stories like Chuck and Shurlee and incredible and heart-warming. Whether we see these stories play out in real-life or simply on a screen, we can view those around us, even the homeless, as people who can do good. Wouldn’t you want that same opportunity provided to you?
